Book Summary:

To the younger generations if you vote, you must read my book. Don't vote. Read my book, then vote. We all must be on the same page. Read between the lines. Don't just read it; understand each statement. I have lived through all the damage from a country where people were happy and employed. When freedom was a reality, a few years ago, I found out about a brother I had in Canada. I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know him. He was a successful man who raised a family of six. This man gave me the information about my mother, Marie Delina Corrine LeBlanc. She was born in Fox Creek, Westmorland County, in Canada. Wow, what a family tree. My mother's family side during 1990 US census has family census 42,500 just on the LeBlanc side. I was raised in Connecticut, and my father was a union carpenter in Hartford, Connecticut. I was the baby among eight children; what an experience growing up. Never mind that. Anyway, I always remained neutral, believing what my parents had taught me. The government is here to provide the employment opportunity so you could work and provide for the government in the form of taxes. This system worked well for the majority of people. Anyway, this book is about the last forty years and a little about the 1897 1929 era, what led up to the recession of the thirties, how long it took to just get people going again, and the systems that were designed so people would have safety nets. So no one experienced again what they went through in that era. Those people went through hell; they were some very resilient people. Anyway, in 2012, I saw a familiar name running for president. Knowing what this man did in Massachusetts, I decided to start writing. I made a bunch of fliers and started to hand these out to people randomly, explaining what I knew to be true about what he had done to the people of Massachusetts. It was okay for him to outsource jobs, force people to buy insurance, and do everything possible to benefit the conglomerates and millionaires, but his idea of helping the people by outsourcing jobs was what was best. As we know, this does nothing to benefit the people in their daily lives. During all my research, I got mad and sent a letter to the White House. Much to my surprise, three weeks later, I received a response from the White House. Wow! They actually responded. So as time went on, I kept writing. I wrote a two-page short story I titled "Two Recessions." I, in turn, mailed this to the White House. About three months later, I got another response. Wow! Someone is actually paying attention to the citizens of America. For thirty-five years, I have waited for a president to do something to reverse the effects of the North American Accord. Thanks, President Obama, for the action you took to reverse the damage from this act that Ronald Reagan created, which has been devastating to the working-class people's lives. Families were destroyed, farms were destroyed, and factories closed. Hey, how do we, the people, provide for our families? No one had any solutions, so the safety nets that had been created by our ancestors stretched to the point of breaking. So if you want to know what happened to America, read my book. I have lived through all the damage. From the day of the speech about the North American Accord, everyone thought it had no effect until the signing. Wrong. Look back in history; the truth is there. I am a simple person. I have made my living as an auto technician for twenty-five years, six of them as a state motor vehicle emissions inspector, and this gave me the advantage I needed to keep my head above water. If you are mad about what is going on today, look, read, and understand the information that is in this book. If you don't believe it, do the research I have done. Once again, I am an offspring of two families with four hundred years of American history. Everyone is wondering why our deficit is growing. Well, for forty years that we have been outsourcin

Book Summary:

Most of the people leading the United States of America graduated from the best colleges and universities, and you'd think they'd be willing and capable of making wise decisions. But most of our founding fathers didn't attend Harvard, Yale or any other institution of higher learning; they made decisions that created the greatest nation on earth using common sense, good judgment and perhaps a little help from God. Abraham Lincoln learned to read from the Bible. We need that kind of leadership today, but most politicians refuse to call on the wisdom of God when making their decisions, neither do they consult the people that elected them that they are supposed to represent. If we are going to get our country back on the right track we have to get more involved and start holding them accountable when they make bad decisions; and we have to evaluate our own decisions that affect the country, start making changes that will help bring our country back to what the founding fathers visualized.

Book Summary:

'Nick Bryant is brilliant. He has a way of showing you what you've been missing from the whole story whilst never leaving you feeling stupid.' – Emily Maitlis 'Bryant is a genuine rarity, a Brit who understands America' – Washington Post In When America Stopped Being Great, veteran reporter and BBC New York correspondent Nick Bryant reveals how America's decline paved the way for Donald Trump's rise, sowing division and leaving the country vulnerable to its greatest challenge of the modern era. Deftly sifting through almost four decades of American history, from post-Cold War optimism, through the scandal-wracked nineties and into the new millennium, Bryant unpacks the mistakes of past administrations, from Ronald Reagan's 'celebrity presidency' to Barack Obama's failure to adequately address income and racial inequality. He explains how the historical clues, unseen by many (including the media) paved the way for an outsider to take power and a country to slide towards disaster. As Bryant writes, 'rather than being an aberration, Trump's presidency marked the culmination of so much of what had been going wrong in the United States for decades – economically, racially, politically, culturally, technologically and constitutionally.' A personal elegy for an America lost, unafraid to criticise actors on both sides of the political divide, When America Stopped Being Great takes the long view, combining engaging storytelling with recent history to show how the country moved from the optimism of Reagan's 'Morning in America' to the darkness of Trump's 'American Carnage'. It concludes with some of the most dramatic events in recent memory, in an America torn apart by a bitterly polarised election, racial division, the national catastrophe of the coronavirus and the threat to US democracy evidenced by the storming of Capitol Hill.

Book Summary:

On 18th April 2017, Theresa May stunned Britain by announcing a snap election. With poll leads of more than 20 points over Jeremy Corbyn’s divided Labour Party, the first Tory landslide since Margaret Thatcher’s day seemed certain. Seven weeks later, Tory dreams had turned to dust. Instead of the 100-seat victory she’d been hoping for, May had lost her majority, leaving Parliament hung and her premiership hanging by a thread. Labour MPs, meanwhile, could scarcely believe their luck. Far from delivering the wipe-out that most predicted, Corbyn’s popular, anti-austerity agenda won the party 30 seats, cementing his position as leader and denying May the right to govern alone. This timely and indispensable book gets to the bottom of why the Tories failed, and how Corbyn’s Labour overcame impossible odds to emerge closer to power than at any election since the era of Tony Blair. Who was to blame for the Tories’ mistakes? How could so many politicians and pollsters fail to see what was coming? And what was the secret of Corbyn’s apparently unstoppable rise? Through new interviews and candid private accounts from key players, political journalists Tim Ross and Tom McTague set out to answer these questions and more, piecing together the inside story of this most dramatic and important of elections.

Book Summary:

This book was written to be thought-provoking and to ask, "Is he talking about me?" I want you to pick up this book and not be able to put it down until you have finished reading it. I wrote this book in a manner that it doesn't matter what your political ideology is. You can apply whatever school of thought you have and still be able to see the relevance to your own life. I want you to take away the ability to see all points of view and that everyone is entitled to their opinion even if you don't agree with it. I want you to see how our country has changed and the impact that it has had on everyone. We have become a lost country that needs to find its way back home. We are a very large country that requires a great deal of management. Making comparisons between us and countries in Europe is like comparing apples and oranges. It doesn't work. Read this book and make a difference.

Book Summary:

An Amazon Best History Book of 2019 "A splendid and beautifully written illustration of the tremendous importance public policy has for the daily lives of ordinary people." —Ryan Cooper, Washington Monthly Over the last generation, the United States has undergone seismic changes. Stable institutions have given way to frictionless transactions, which are celebrated no matter what collateral damage they generate. The concentration of great wealth has coincided with the fraying of social ties and the rise of inequality. How did all this come about? In Transaction Man, Nicholas Lemann explains the United States’—and the world’s—great transformation by examining three remarkable individuals who epitomized and helped create their eras. Adolf Berle, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s chief theorist of the economy, imagined a society dominated by large corporations, which a newly powerful federal government had forced to become benign and stable institutions, contributing to the public good by offering stable employment and generous pensions. By the 1970s, the corporations’ large stockholders grew restive under this regime, and their chief theoretician, Harvard Business School’s Michael Jensen, insisted that firms should maximize shareholder value, whatever the consequences. Today, Silicon Valley titans such as the LinkedIn cofounder and venture capitalist Reid Hoffman hope “networks” can reknit our social fabric. Lemann interweaves these fresh and vivid profiles with a history of the Morgan Stanley investment bank from the 1930s through the financial crisis of 2008, while also tracking the rise and fall of a working-class Chicago neighborhood and the family-run car dealerships at its heart. Incisive and sweeping, Transaction Man is the definitive account of the reengineering of America and the enormous impact it has had on us all.

Book Summary:

This long awaited biography of Harold Rugg is a dramatic and compelling story with profound implications for today’s educators. Harold Rugg, one of the leading progressive educators of the 20th century, developed an innovative social studies program and textbook series that was censured by conservative critics during the 1940s. Read the full story behind Rugg, the man and the educator, and the critics who attacked him. Harold O. Rugg was professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and a key leader among the social frontier group that emerged in the 1930s to argue that schools should play a stronger role in helping to reconstruct society. He was author of a best selling social studies textbook series that came under attack from patriotic and business groups in the early years of World War II. The story of his rise and fall encapsulates a pivotal episode in the history of American education and reveals a great deal about the direction of schooling in American life, the many roads not taken, and possibilities for the future. This indepth examination of Rugg's life and career provides historical perspective on the recurring struggles over education. Book Summary:

A Smithsonian Magazine Best History Book of 2018 The unknown history of two ideas crucial to the struggle over what America stands for In Behold, America, Sarah Churchwell offers a surprising account of twentieth-century Americans' fierce battle for the nation's soul. It follows the stories of two phrases -- the "American dream" and "America First" -- that once embodied opposing visions for America. Starting as a Republican motto before becoming a hugely influential isolationist slogan during World War I, America First was always closely linked with authoritarianism and white supremacy. The American dream, meanwhile, initially represented a broad vision of democratic and economic equality. Churchwell traces these notions through the 1920s boom, the Depression, and the rise of fascism at home and abroad, laying bare the persistent appeal of demagoguery in America and showing us how it was resisted. At a time when many ask what America's future holds, Behold, America is a revelatory, unvarnished portrait of where we have been.

Book Summary:

“An engaging, beautifully synthesized page-turner” (Slate). The #1 New York Times bestseller and Time #1 Nonfiction Book of the Year: Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most personal memoir yet, about the 2016 presidential election. In this “candid and blackly funny” (The New York Times) memoir, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. She takes us inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. “At her most emotionally raw” (People), Hillary describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. She tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. In this “feminist manifesto” (The New York Times), she speaks to the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics. Offering a “bracing... guide to our political arena” (The Washington Post), What Happened lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future. The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign, now with a new epilogue showing how Hillary grappled with many of her worst fears coming true in the Trump Era, while finding new hope in a surge of civic activism, women running for office, and young people marching in the streets.
