Book Summary:

The U.S. Army has asked the National Research Council (NRC) to evaluate whether supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) is an effective and appropriate means of eliminating hazardous or toxic organic constituents in VX hydrolysate for ultimate disposition. The NRC was not asked to conduct an in-depth analysis of the entire integrated VX bulk agent destruction and disposal process for the Newport Chemical Agent Disposal Facility. As the facility design is being finalized (March 1999-April 2000), the NRC will probably be asked to assess all aspects of the facility design, including monitoring, containment, process control, and redundancy, as well as the quantitative risk assessment (QRA). This report outlines the elements of the proposed neutralization/SCWO technology, evaluates the results of ongoing SCWO tests, and makes recommendations concerning aspects of the technology that require further development. The scope of this evaluation did not include evaluations of other potential technologies or management options for the treatment of VX hydrolysate.

Book Summary:

Little did John Davis think when he and his friend Dudley Curtis set off for a pub on a rainy, fall evening that before they reached the pub door, Dudley would be murdered by a tiny speck of the deadly nerve agent VX. This murder involves John and his Noir colleagues, Richard Moore and Chloe Manning, in a mystery entailing chemical weapons. VX: A Deadly Mist is a suspense thriller tracing the possible theft by terrorists of chemical weapons and chemical agents from U S Army bases. Homeland Security seeks help from the FBI, the CIA and a shadowy French undercover organization, the Noir. While suspicion spreads distrust of upper level government officials, three of the Noirs agents visit army bases to track down an M23 land mine, two 4.2-inch M2 mortars and four M55 rockets all missing from their stockpile sites. Were these deadly weapons simply diversions for a more lethal action? The Noir agents work against the clock to find and return the stolen chemical weapons and prevent powerful, well-organized insurgents from using the insidious VX to kill millions. Chloe Manning calls on her contacts with high officials. Richard Moore, while struggling with past romantic entanglements and a French girls crush, recognizes his wedding must play second fiddle to national security. John Davis strives to overcome jealousy and concentrate on preventing a national catastrophe. Actions based on hints and surmises rather than facts begin to pay off, with help from U S Army personnel at three military bases, local and state police, but time is running out.

Book Summary:

This report provides information from two tests studying the hot (90 degree) NaOH neutralization of VX without stabilizer in the 12 Liter Mettler reaction calorimeter. Both tests yielded a two phase (liquids) hydrolysate in which VX was not detected (20 ppb detection limit); and the volume of the upper phase appeared to be less than that generated in reactions of hot NaOH and VX with stabilizer. Aside from differences (attributed to stabilizer products) in the composition of the upper layer, the hydrolysate produced by the reaction of VX without stabilizer and hot NaOH appears to be chemically similar to that generated by the reaction of VX with stabilizer and NaOH.

Book Summary:

The research described in this study is part of the continued support to the Alternative Technology Program's search for the optimum procedure to demilitarize the chemical agent, VX, in lieu of incineration. This report is a summary of data from 11 samples of demiled VX tested in mice by the intravenous route to determine their toxicity. Toxicity (24-hr LD50s) ranged from 32.3-10,306 mg/kg. The historical value for VX in mice by the intravenous route is 0.014 mg/kg. Based on the observed toxic signs in mice, nine samples no longer produced typical toxic signs as related to nerve agent poisoning. Two samples (M12-04-09-VW-0777 and M12-04-10-VW-0777) still produced tremors and salivation in mice following their injection. It is assumed their toxic effects were related to residual EA 2192. Toxicity of the demiled VX was reduced from four to six orders of magnitude. Toxicity from nine of the test substances was related to the by-product salts and other VX/NaOH/water breakdown products.

Book Summary:

The effect of drop size on the degradation rate of VX, O-ethyl S-[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl]methylphosphonothioate, in fresh concrete has been examined using 31P NMR. Drops of neat VX, ranging in size from 4 micro-L to 0.2 micro-L, applied to small concrete coupons (8 mm x 15 mm) were observed to degrade at different rates, with the 1 micro-L and smaller drops reacting in less than 4 days, and the larger droplets reacting in less than 11 days. Additionally, 4 micro-L VX predissolved in hexane to evenly spread it over the concrete coupon likewise reacted faster, degrading in less than 5 days. The fresh concrete, less than 2 months old, exhibited significantly faster VX degradation for all drop sizes than that observed for "aged" concrete in a previous study where VX persisted for months. The enhanced reactivity of the "fresh" concrete for VX was maintained for at least a 1-year period. The pH of water containing crushed "fresh" and "aged" concrete was 10.0 and 9.0, respectively. The higher pH of the "fresh" concrete is one reason for its enhanced reactivity toward VX. An additional contribution to the enhanced reactivity of the "fresh" concrete is suggested by the increased mobility of its sorbed VX as evidenced by its significantly narrower peak in NMR spectra.
