Book Summary:

The Remaking of Television New Zealand outlines and analyses the radical changes made to television broadcasting in New Zealand during the period 1984-1992. It looks closely at how TVNZ, a division of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand, was transformed into a successful commercial company under the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986. Based on remarkable inside access, this book is an important and valuable study of the transformation of a staid public television broadcaster into a market-oriented business.

Book Summary:

Despite the range of theoretical and methological positions adopted and the wide range of issues and topics related to advertising covered by cultural studies, relationships between sport and advertising have been largely overlooked. Given its gobal popularity and its prevalence across the spectrum of cultural and commercial life it is not surprising that scholars interrogating the cultural politics of sport have begun to recognise advertising as an important site for the analysis of power relations, cultural politics and cultural repesentation. Sport, Culture and Advertising presents a first step towards understanding the relationship between advertising and identity with a focus on sport. The book will be useful for scholars across a range of disciplines and will be of interest to students looking for a more critical examination of the commercial realm of sport.

Book Summary:

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Australia and New Zealand extensively deregulated their economies to create two of the most open markets in the industrialized world. Drawing on interviews with more than 180 leading policymakers in Australia and New Zealand -- including former prime ministers, ministers of finance, treasurers, and public servants -- Shaun Goldfinch analyzes the factors that made the deregulation process different in each country. Describing specific policies -- including liberalization of financial and capital markets, lowering of trade barriers, the floating of the exchange rate, and privatization -- he compares the "crash-through" approach that characterized reform in New Zealand with the "bargained consensus" that underpinned change in Australia. In Australia, influences on policy were relatively diffuse and implementations open and decentralized. New Zealand's more centralized government structure resulted in a concentration of influence and less deliberation. He contrasts rapid and gradual change, arguing that the latter may yield better policy results and prevent political instability. Shedding new light on the economic policymaking process, including the role of economic ideas, institutions, and policy elites, this book will appeal to both students and professionals in interested in public policy, comparative politics, and economics.

Book Summary:

In 1946 a group of students and idealists got together to realise their visions for a modern city. Over the following half century, the Architectural Centre they founded helped to shape the possibilities of modern life in urban New Zealand and profoundly influenced the remaking of the capital city of Wellington. More than just an association of architects, the Centre furthered education, published a magazine – Design Review – hosted modernist exhibitions in its gallery, staged an audacious campaign for political influence called ‘the Project’ and fought for better planning, better design, better built environments in Wellington. Its members also built a demonstration house, but ‘planning was the battle-cry’. Charting these activists and their projects over the years, Julia Gatley and Paul Walker in Vertical Living also offer a history of urban Wellington from the 1940s to the 1990s and beyond. The book reminds us that, in modernist ideology, architecture and urban planning went hand-in-hand with visual and craft arts, graphic and industrial design. In recovering the multi-disciplinary history, politics and planning of the Architectural Centre, Gatley and Walker begin writing the city back into the history of architecture in New Zealand.
