This historic book may have numerous typos, missing text or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1852. Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... This was the case when Adam gave names to all the creatures which God formed. No doubt the names given were expressive of the qualities of the creatures to whom they were affixed. In the Scriptures we frequently read of names being given to persons and places, descriptive of the gratitude, and expressive of the hopes, of the individuals who gave them. Thus, Abraham called the name of the mountain where he was about to sacrifice Isaac, "Jehovah-Jireh." So Samuel set up a stone at the place of deliverance, and called it "Ebenezer." On the same principle, the mother of Jabez gave him a name which recorded her own exercises of mind in connexion with him. In like manner, all the names of Jesus are descriptive, and are intended to set forth his excellences. They are none of them mere empty titles, but are all full of blessed meaning. A name among men is frequently the representative of nothing, but the name of Jesus is the representative of infinity. His name describes what he was. He was the Word, even the Word who was with God, and was God. He, as "the Wisdom," was with God before the world was. (Prov. viii.) His names, "Wisdom," "Word," and " Lamb slain before the foundation of the world," not only declare his personal Godhead, but also his headship; exhibiting Him as the great One, in whom the Church was chosen; in whom all blessings were treasured up; who is the foundation of God's glory, and the centre of all his purposes; and who was eternally preordained to all the wonders and glories which cluster around his incarnation, humiliation, exaltation, and coming reign. His name describes what He has done. Frequently, among men, the words name and fame are used interchangeably. A man's name is often a record of his fame. The deeds he has done are inscribed on the na...

Book Summary:

Since 1876, Jehovah’s Witnesses have believed that they are living in the last days of the present world. Charles T. Russell, their founder, advised his followers that members of Christ’s church would be raptured in 1878, and by 1914 Christ would destroy the nations and establish his kingdom on earth. The first prophecy was not fulfilled, but the outbreak of the First World War lent some credibility to the second. Ever since that time, Jehovah’s Witnesses have been predicting that the world would end “shortly.” Their numbers have grown to many millions in over two hundred countries. They distribute a billion pieces of literature annually, and continue to anticipate the end of the world. For almost thirty years, M. James Penton’s Apocalypse Delayed has been the definitive scholarly study of this religious movement. As a former member of the sect, Penton offers a comprehensive overview of the Jehovah's Witnesses. His book is divided into three parts, each presenting the Witnesses’ story in a different context: historical, doctrinal, and sociological. Some of the issues he discusses are known to the general public, such as the sect’s opposition to military service and blood transfusions. Others involve internal controversies, including political control of the organization and the handling of dissent within the ranks. Thoroughly revised, the third edition of Penton’s classic text includes substantial new information on the sources of Russell’s theology and on the church’s early leaders, as well as coverage of important developments within the sect since the second edition was published fifteen years ago.

Book Summary:

In the last twenty years, there has been a growing recognition of the centrality of religious beliefs to an understanding of Victorian literature and society. This interdisciplinary collection makes a significant contribution to post-secularist scholarship on Victorian culture, reflecting the great diversity of religious beliefs and doubts in Victorian Britain, with essays on Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Unitarian, and spiritualist topics. Writing from a variety of disciplinary perspectives for an interdisciplinary audience, the essayists investigate religious belief using diverse historical and literary sources, including journalism, hymns, paintings, travel-writings, scientific papers, novels, and poetry. Essays in the volume examine topics including: • The relation between science and religion in the career of evolutionary biologist Alfred Russel Wallace (Thomas Prasch); • The continuing significance of the Bible in geopolitical discourse (Eric Reisenauer); • The role of children and children’s hymns in the missionary and temperance movements (Alisa Clapp-Itnyre); • The role of women in Christian and Jewish traditions (Julie Melnyk and Lindsay Dearinger); • The revival of Catholicism and Catholic culture and practices (Katherine Haldane Grenier and Michelle Meinhart); • The occult religious society Golden Dawn (Sharon Cogdill); • Faith in the writings of the Brontë sisters (Christine Colón), Charles Dickens (Jessica Hughes) and George Eliot (Robert Koepp).

Book Summary:

Samuel Taylor Coleridge called Edward Irving "a minister of Christ, after the order of Paul." Edward Irving was a great preacher, probably the best in Georgian Britain. He was also a profound theologian and a caring pastor. Yet, it is a strange fact of history that this Paul-like "minister of Christ" was eventually removed from the church he had made famous, unfairly expelled from his denomination for heresy, and at the end of his brief life, was demoted in the sect that emerged from his ministry. Towards the end of Irving's life, charismatic gifts emerged in his church amidst great controversy. He had already developed a theological rationale for such gifting, and his extensive teaching on spiritual gifts is still widely consulted today. Edward Irving was and is a controversial figure. It is time that his life, ministry, and teaching were reconsidered. Who was Edward Irving? How did he live? What made him outstanding? What made him so controversial? What is his legacy? These are the questions answered in Edward Irving Reconsidered. It is a compelling story, as sad as it is powerful.

Book Summary:

"These letters of two poets and solitaries betray a giddy delight in wordplay, unconstrained by rules of grammar or conventions of spelling. Puns, portmanteaus, and inside jokes abound. The thiry-year exchange began when Merton dashed off a note on June 17, 1938, after spending a week with Lax's family. The final epistle in their correspondence was written by Lax on December 8, 1968. Merton died in Bangkok five days later and never received it." "Arthur Biddle spent nearly ten years collecting every letter known to exist between Merton and Lax, a total of 346, two-thirds of which have never been published. Biddle provides chronologies of their lives and, through unobtrusive notes, places events and people in context within the letters. This volume also includes the text of a rare interview with Lax."--BOOK JACKET.

In this scholarly classic, first published over eighty years ago, Alexander Hislop reveals that many Roman Catholic teachings did not originate with Christ or the Bible, but were adopted from ancient pagan Babylonian religion, and given Christian names.
