Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Pharmaceutical Era, Vol. 53: January to December, 1920 The influence these recent experiences will exert upon the pharmacy of the near future remains to be determined, but leading spirits among those engaged in the calling are optimistic enough to believe that professional pharmacy hereafter will be in the ascendant, yet. Further emphasized and supported 'by the intensive commercial methods of a great. Reconstruction period. All present legis lation points to the further restriction of pharmacy to professional pharmacists. The Federal Narcotic Act and the regulations for the enforcement of the prohibition law make the registered pharma cist the principal pivot around which the enforce ment of these laws revolves. Throughout the coun try educational standards for pharmacists are being advanced. This movement, together with the increasing spread of prerequisite laws, is a further indication of the direction in which phar macy is tending. Are not these combined movements indicative of the character of the p'harmacopoeial decade upon which we are now entering? Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Pharmaceutical Era, Vol. 23: Weekly; January-June, 1900 The days of the pharmacist whose range covered the entire science and art of pharmacy are nearly over. The pharmacist, in keeping himself posted on the rapidly ln creasing number of medicaments, will find little time for manufacturing pharmaceutical products made by tedious processes. These will be relegated to the manufacturing pharmacist. Let the pharmacist take one last lingering look at those good old days that he reads about, and that he may perhaps wish back again, when he had a labora tory wherein be compounded the whole catalogue of pharmaceutical products, turn his face into the future, and say with Holmes: Build thee more stately mansions, O my soul! As the swift seasons roll! Leave thy low-vaulted past! Let each new temple, nobler than the last, Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast. Till thou at length art free, Leaving thine outgrown shell by life's unresting sea! While looking into the future, it may be well, how ever, not to overlook the present. Political, social and commercial metamorphoses are not brought about in a day, or even a lifetime. The most urgent and most meces sary concern that man has, who is affected by them, is daily bread and butter. No man would -be satisfied with a meal that is guaranteed him fifty years hence. The physician - pharmacist by no means has reached his zenith, nor will he ever be the exclusive apostle of medicine and pharmacy. The present standpoint of the pharmacist is the one that prompts the penning of this article, and it is from this standpoint that we shall consider his right course of conduct. Experience and observation are, per haps, our best teachers, and it is from them that I cull a few tenets. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Pharmaceutical Era, Vol. 44: An Illustrated Monthly Publication for the Drug Trade; January, 1911 The clear gray eyes of the woman met those of the speaker understandingly. She glanced backward toward the waiting room door which was slowly opening and saw a room packed with discontented humanity. She paused to say softly, Thank you. I will wear the new habit you have given me, throughout the coming year gladly and I trust gracefully. I shall stop chafing uselessly over what I have no power to con trol and endeavor to make the best of my own condition and surroundings. With buoyant step she passed from the room, to go forward into a New Year of greater prosperity through intelligent rather than indolent repose.
