Henry Fleming, a raw Union Army recruit in the American Civil War, is anxious to confirm his patriotism and manhood—to earn his “badge of courage.” But his dreams of heroism and invulnerability are soon shattered when he flees the Confederate enemy during his baptism of fire and then witnesses the horrible death of a friend. Plunged unwillingly into the nightmare of war, Fleming survives by sheer luck and instinct. This edition of Stephen Crane’s poignant classic is supplemented by five of his acclaimed short stories as well as selected poetry, offering the full range of this great American author’s extraordinary talent. Published separately from 1902-1908 in fashionable magazines such as Scribners and Harpers Monthly, The Descent of Man and Other Stories is infused with Whartons trademark irony. Even the title story, The Descent of Man , asks the reader to consider her story keeping Charles Darwins book of the same name in mind. The stories in this collection are more humorous than in other compilations. For example, The Other Two is a comedic tale about a man who marries a woman already twice divorced. Coincidence and life continually put him into unexpected contact with his wifes former spouses. In a breach of good manners and to his mortification, he finds himself being served tea by his wife along with the two ex-husbands. Whartons novella Madame de Treymes centers around Fanny de Malrive, ne Frisbee, an American married to a French marquis and living in France. Fanny, like many of Whartons heroines, is trapped in a loveless marriage and by societal mores. However, the social caste which Fanny struggles against is the Parisian Faubourg St. Germain aristocracy rather than the Old New York society Wharton usually favors. Fanny has fallen in love with American John Durham, a childhood friend. She wishes to marry him and return to New York. However, her husband is Catholic and Fanny worries that he will deny her a divorce and keep her son, his heir, from her. Madame de Treymes shows readers that legal and religious issues surrounding children in divorces at turn of the century are still relevant today.
