Whartons novella Madame de Treymes centers around Fanny de Malrive, ne Frisbee, an American married to a French marquis and living in France. However, the social caste which Fanny struggles against is the Parisian Faubourg St. Germain aristocracy rather than the Old New York society Wharton usually favors. However, her husband is Catholic and Fanny worries that he will deny her a divorce and keep her son, his heir, from her.
