Book Summary:

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ...of gourd pierced with holes, which was filled with small stones." It constituted an enormous rattle, and was shaken in time with the playing of the other instruments. 2Anecdote reported by M. Arthur Pougin, in the introduction to the I ndes galantes in the Michaelis edition. "The Air of the Savages" had a long life and many imitators. Not alone did Balbastro transfer it to the organ, at the Concert spirituel, in 1755; but one also finds an arrangement of it for two transverse flutes, violins or violas in the second Recueil de pieces, petits airs, etc., du flutiste, by Michel Blavet. On the other hand, the violinists, the younger Abbe and Tarade, supplied it with variations, and Gardel employs it in his first ballet: Le Premier navigateur ou le pouvoir de l'amour (July 25, 1785). Finally, Dalayrac made use of the "Air of the Savages" in the prologue to his comic opera Azemia ou les Sauvages, words by Lachabeaussiere, given aux Italiens on May 2, 1787.3 The Mercure of the day regards this interpolation in the mimic and descriptive symphony with which the work opens, as an act of homage to Rameau's greatness. In the meantime, instrumental music furnished some specimens of American airs. The literature of the bass viol supplies us with the following example, which we borrow from an mss. collection which leans largely on pieces by Marais senior, Roland Marais, Forqueray, de Caix and others. This piece is entitled L'Ame'riquaine: ' XObservations aur lea ecrita modemea, II, p. 288. 'Le Pour et la Contre, VII, p. 22. 'The Air dea Sauvagcs appears in the bass of the Allegro moderato of the Prologue. 'Recueil do pieces de violle avec la Bane tire...

Book Summary:

This booklet hardly needs a preface; the contents, I think, speak for themselves. It contains a short and carefully brought up to date resume of all that I, as a private University Lecturer in Amsterdam, have tried to teach my pupils. It is intended as a general introduction to ethnomusicology, before going on to the study of the forms of separate music-cultures. I sincerely hope that those, who wish to teach themselves and to qualify in this branch of knowledge, will find a satisfactory basis for self tuition in the matter here brought together. Regarding the possibility of a new edition, any critical remarks or infor mation as to possible desiderata would be very gratefully received. J. K. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION My request for critical remarks and desiderata has not been ignored. My sincere thanks to all who took the trouble to let me know what they missed in my booklet. Through their collaboration the contents have undergone a considerable improvement and enlargement as compared to the original edition issued in 1950 by the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam, under the title 'Musicologica'. I have taken care to add many particulars from non-European sources, with the result that now the book is no longer so Europe-centric as it was.

Book Summary:

The Wind Band Music of Henry Cowell studies the compositions for wind band by twentieth-century composer Henry Cowell, a significant and prolific figure in American fine art music from 1914-1965. The composer is noteworthy and controversial because of his radical early works, his interest in non-Western musics, and his retrogressive mature style—along with notoriety for his imprisonment in San Quentin on a morals charge. Eleven chapters are organized both topically and chronologically. An introduction, conclusion, series of eight appendices, bibliography, and discography complete this comprehensive study, along with an audio playlist of representative works, hosted on the CMS website.
