Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, Enlarged, Vol. 28: From January to April, Inclusive, 1799 During this examination, the natives began to collect about them. One man exchanged a spear for some trinkets, but no other barter was efl'ected. Some looking-glasses being shewn to this man, he was so delighted with seeing the reflection of himself, that he ran off with them. As the people did not appear unfriendly, Lieutenant Broughton and a party walked along the shore towards their habitations, the boat keeping near them: but hostile preparations were soon observed to be snaking by the natives; and-those who had not spears collected large sticks. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, Enlarged, 1812, Vol. 67: From January to April, Inclusive; With an Appendix The reader of Abbate Balsamo's work will often have 00 casion to remind himself that it is a mere journal, and must reckon on finding' in it little more than local description and detail. On arriving at the part (p. Which treats of the county of Modica, we expected, from the particular reference to it in the title-page, to be gratified with more comprehensive views, but in vain; for it may be truly said of the Abbate, as of the Celtic hard, that one note is struck at the begin ning and continued to the end. The utility of such minute descriptions we by no means question in the case of those who possess landed property in the island, or who have an interest in improving its interior administration: but we must repeat that we have strong objections to the attempt to palm this book on the British public as a general view of the state of Sicily. The Abbate's Appendix is the only part that possesses a title to such a character, and it is too short and imperfect to consti tute more than a mere sketch. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, Enlarged, Vol. 26: From May to August, Inclusive, 1798; With an Appendix Dark tells the. River through the narrow plain. In proportion as the light of day faded from us, the roads became more rocky, uno ual, and abominable. A considerable quantity of rain had fallen a few hours before, which filling up the numberless inequalities with which these ston ways abound, we continually plunged into pools of mud, and shrmbied over rocky fragments, alternately hazarding the pains of suffocation, and the fracture of our limbs. This very 49-3. 061: amusement continued till half past nine o'clock, when we were blessed with the sight of a rush-light glimmering through the window of the Angel inn, which we entered about two hours ago. Our first. Appearance was made in the kitchen, where a scene was exhibited that would have afforded an admirable subject for the pencil of Hogarth. Alarge table covered with rounds of beef, loins of pork, fragments of geese, &c. &c. Appeared at one end, round which was seated a motely groupe of noisy hvelsh maties, who voraciously devoured the 00d things before them. Opposite to these were two Scotch ped lgm. Eating their frugal repast in silence, an oaten cake, and rock lihe cheese, and diluting it with acid tiff their eyes rivetted in wistful gaze, on the substantial fare which smoked on the adjoining table. The middle of the kitchen was occupied by a number of s rtsmen just returned from growse-shooting on the mountains, sing their guns, and preparing them for the morrow's amuse ment. In the back ground flame an enormous fire, where a coun to'part of dame Leonarda was preparing another set of joints, for a second party of sportsmen who were just arrived. Tired pointers and swing spaniels were scattered over the floor, and completed the picture. Notwithstanding the disadvantageous fi ire we made, (for to confess the truth we were marvellous y foul and the numerous guestswho called on the mistress of the house tn all directions, we met with an attention and civility from Mrs. Evans (the hostess that will always claim our grateful remembrance. We were shewn into a snug little room, and speedily regaled with a sumptuous supper.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Monthly Review, or Literary Journal, Enlarged, Vol. 43: From January to April, Inclusive, 1804 The love of variety is to natural to man, unless his mind is debased by barbarous ignorance or lost in morbid apa thy, that few objects of contemplation and few subjects of discussion are agreeable to him for a long time without a change. In a taste for literature, this disposition as generally prevails as in other pursuits: but there are some departments bf science, and some branches of the bells: lettrrr, which te tain their powers of attraction more than Others; and among these we may certainly rank those books which describe voyages (it travels in distant or unknown regions. Often, therefore, as we have of late introduced such works to the notice of out readers, and they have for some time past been remarkably frequent, we shall not bevcry apprehensive of exhausting their patience or even of diminishing their appetite. The name of tofessor Pallas will be an additional security against any such effect in the present instance, with those who duly appreciate his laborious research, his profound knowlcge, and his accu rate observation, in the attractive paths of natural history.
