Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: November 22, 1923 The world is doing its duty along this line, even though perhaps it knows it not, as well as are the Latter-day Saints. The Church is building temples wherein the work can be done, but it could not be done without a knowledge of genealogy. Elder Richards exhorted the Saints to give heed to this princi ple and called upon those who are able, who have means, to sup port the great work. Do not get so wrapped up in business and worldly affairs that no attention can be given to this great work, he urged. He expressed the prayer that the Saints will heed to apply themselves to this great principle. Elder George Albert Smith, the second speaker, said his heart is filled with gratitude that he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and these are not idle words, he said. No other people is so blessed; and yet he sometimes fears the Saints do not realize how blessed they are, chosen, as it were, from among the multitude of God's people to understand Him and His purpose. Do Latter-day Saints appreciate what they have, the very word of God given unto them in personal letters, as has been said, he asked. Some there are who grasp at mere bubbles and lose the real purpose of life, he declared. This life is but the stepping stone to a greater sphere. If it were not realized that there is a future life, if there were nothing but the vanities and vexations of this life, many would weary, the speaker said. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: February 15, 1923 When I was about sixteen years of age I became possessed of a very strong desire to see other countries. My mind was directed towards New Zealand but seeing an advertisement in a Canadian newspaper, I applied for the position and secured it. Twelve years next March I sailed from Liverpool on the Empress of Ireland. My destination was Cardston, in the Province of Alberta. I knew nothing whatever concerning the town or its inhabitants. I cannot describe my feelings - feelings of surprise and disappointment - wi]en I found myself in a Mormon com munity. This brought about a bad attack of home-sickness, and if I had had the means I would have at once returned to England. When my people heard the news, they were almost as greatly alarmed as they would have been if they had heard that I had been cast off on an island inhabited by cannibals. I decided, however, to make the best of the situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Elder Joseph Fielding Smith of the Council of Twelve and Dr. F. S. Harris, president of the Brigham Young university, are the Church leaders distinguished by election to this renowned British philosophical organization. The prestige of membership in the Victoria Institute was first accorded a member of the Latter-day Saint Church with the election of Dr. James E. Talmage, of the Council of Twelve, in 1899. In 1921, associateship was conferred upon Dr. John A. Widtsoe of the Council of Twelve. Both Dr. Talmage and Dr. Widtsoe have served as president of the European Mission of the Church. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: August 29, 1907 As we have seen by the foregoing, in order for our prayers to be acceptable to God, they must be offered up in faith and sincerity. We must also offer up our petitions in the name of Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of the Father. With the Lord there is neither variableness nor shadow of turn ing; He is the same, yesterday, to-day and forever; He is just as ready, just as willing to respond to the requests of His children in these last days as He was to hear and answer the prayers of His faithful sons and daughters in former dispensations. Tens of thousands of Latter-day Saints testify to the truth of this state ment. N 0 people who have ever lived upon this earth have had more direct answers to prayer than the Latter-day Saints have had. How often have we seen the promise of the Messiah verified: Whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, that shall ye receive. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 94: September 8, 1932 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege; let them worship how, where, or what they many. Had any progress been made? Do you perceive advancement there in the working out of the divine purpose? This latter declaration was made by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Thus solemn affirmation was made of the inherent right of every man to worship as he will, or, by implication, to abstain from worshiping at all if he will - and can. There are substantial grounds for questioning man's ability to become wholly devoid of the impelling spirit of worship, at least ac knowledging - in love or in fear - some supreme power or Deity. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 82: November 18, 1920 Those of whom we thought unkindly 0ft become our warmest friends. The President expressed his sorrow that differences of political opinion upon questions of the day should engender feelings of hatred; and that criticism of men and measures, by the unin formed, inspired by envy and other unworthy emotions, should ever be found among Latter-day Saints. He admonished the saints with great power to withhold their judgment upon their fellowmen, and upon their procedure in matters of business, until a competent and authoritative judgment had been passed upon them. I wish to say to all Latter-day Saints: Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 96: January 11, 1934 It is obvious that these changed conditions should have little, if any, effect upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its members have always stood for temper ance, they still stand for temperance, and should unitedly use their influence for the enactment of rational laws which will hold the liquor traffic in proper restraint, that we may never return to the golden age of the bootlegger, or the intolerable conditions which preceded him. Without reserve we endorse the attitude of the President of the United States when he says: To take the life of a person without due process of law is murder. It has always been, and still continues to be a fundamental doctrine of the Church that: The murderer has not eternal life abiding in him. Notwithstanding the vexatious delays of the law, the 11n certainty of the verdict to be pronounced by judge or jury, by which violators of the law who are obviously guilty are too frequently acquitted and turned loose 011 the community, to again kill, kidnap, or rob, we admonish members of the Church to refrain from participation in acts of lawlessness, and to advise others to refrain from all association with mobs. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: June 2, 1927 This attractive caption and many others, closely allied in meaning and equally suggestive of energetic and bustling activity, have appeared in bold headlines during recent weeks throughout Great Britain in newspapers both great and small. The result Of this widespread publicity has been that the bee-hive Girls' auxiliary, a division of the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association Of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has not only gained prominence as an important and active organization but is still commanding in increasing measure the attention and wonder of the British public. While in exceptional instances inaccuracies and misstatements have crept into re ports concerning bee-hive work due perhaps to the errors of Special Correspondents or Special Commissioners, the effect has been that not only the general features of the Bee Hive organization have been widely advertized throughout the nation but even the details Of the work have been given prominent place, and fair, if not commendatory comment, in really large and influential journals. Column after column of valuable newspaper space has told of the training the bee-hive work gives in home management, in literary endeavour, in social service and other uplifting activities, all designed to make for perfect womanhood. The following summary Of the work Of the bee-hive organiza tion is taken from an extended account published in the Empire News, and is herewith reproduced, not only for the reason that it illustrates the liberal space and fair treatment accorded by well informed newspapers, but also because the information therein embodied will be instructive to readers in these lands concerning the high purpose and integrity Of this worthy organization: During her service [as a bee-hive worker] each hive builder has to work to definite tests in seven different fields into which, to use the phraseology Of the movement, she is sent to gather honey. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: August 4, 1904 Owing to the constant emigration, the status of the various branches of the mission is constantly changing. Emigration is uniformly discouraged and the Elders are instructed not to preach the principle Of gathering, but when the Gospel takes possession Of a man, he seems moved upon to get to Zion as soon as possible. As a rule it is those of the strongest faith, the keepers of the Word of Wisdom, the honest tithe-payers who gather with the body of the Church, and the Church, throughout the British Isles, is materially crippled by their loss. If the ratio of emigration for the remainder Of this year is proportioned to that of the first four months, the number of those leaving this country during 1904 will far exceed the number baptized into the Church for the same period. The Alberta colonies are at present receiving a fair share of attention from Latter-day Saints who are thinking of making homes for themselves in the new world. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 23, 1907 Christianity of the present day cannot be held in very high es teem by the people of England when they go about seeking to destroy its fundamental principles. But why should the editor of the Times exhibit such fears for the fundamentals of Christian ity? If they are true, if they are the principles of eternal life which were taught by Christ and His apostles, they cannot be overthrown; they will stand forever. If the Christianity of Eng land is built upon the rock of eternal truth; if its ministers have been called of God as were the apostles of old; if their acts have His divine approval; if the doctrines which they teach are the doctrines of the Lord Jesus Christ, it has got nothing to fear from the presence in England of a mere handful of Mormon mission aries. 'christ can take care of His own work; if He cannot, the editor of the Rochdale Times can't save it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
