Book Summary:

In most generations there appears a person, usually a man, who has authenticated powers of healing and who acts, often, as a kind of messiah. This is a person who by his or her charisma and personal magnetism attracts a large following. Charlatan, miracle worker or deluded mystic? Few contemporaries can ever decide and history itself is not sure. Such a person was Francis Schlatter who arrived in Denver in 1892. He was a German immigrant shoemaker and a devout Catholic who was on a special mission for the “Father.” The mission required him to wander about the country and even to be thrown in jail in Arkansas. In the villages of New Mexico, he was known as El Sanador, “The Healer.” This is a collection of articles about Schlatter and his own story of the wandering. He finally disappeared from a ranch in New Mexico and his body and “miraculous” copper rod were later discovered in Mexico. NORMAN CLEAVELAND, born 1901 in California, came home to New Mexico at ten months of age. The son of Agnes Morley Cleaveland, he was educated in Silver City, New Mexico and in California. After receiving his degree at Stanford University, his professional career as a mining engineer was spent principally abroad, including twenty-two years in Southeast Asia. He is the author of two other books, “The Morleys” and “Bang Bang in Amphang.”

Lidija Novakovic tries to uncover the rationale of this extraordinary connection and claims that it can be found in Matthew's own skillful biblical interpretation.

She feels less like an outsider now that she is attending university; in her fellow visual art students she finds open and accepting friendship. Lorelei's view that men are simply prey, and her penchant to rush headlong into liaisons, often lead to disaster. Still, she seeks the emotional experience as inspiration for her art. In her good friends, particularly Paula, a social work student, she has support and advice when she wants it, which is seldom. Through Paula, she meets a practitioner of Eastern medicine who rattles her with his perceptions. Kwok Lee Morgan seems to be everything she finds exciting in a man, but she wants to be dubious about his talents, as she has met many men who have "lines" designed to ensnare women. Though he warns her of an impending health issue, she plunges headlong into a path of self-destructiveness before discovering she is seriously ill. She turns to Kwok Lee for help, and discovers that he, too, has emotional wounds. At first, she finds his instructions difficult, and rails against them, but eventually, she sees that Kwok Lee is sincere in his desire to help. In the end, they heal each other....

Book Summary:

This book, the first to describe women medical practitioners other than midwives in the colonial period, emphasizes that medical care was part of every woman's work. The Healer's Calling uses memorable anecdotes, engaging characters, and medical oddities to tell the fascinating story of the practice of household medicine in early America. Rebecca J. Tannenbaum points out that housewives provided much of the medical care available in the seventeenth century. Elite women cared for the indigent in their towns and used medical practice to make influential connections with powerful men; "doctresses" or "doctor women" supported themselves with their practices and competed directly with male physicians; and midwives were crucial "expert witnesses" in cases of fornication, murder, and witchcraft. Yet there were limits to the authority of women's healing communities, with consequences for those who overstepped the bounds. By setting women's practice in the context of contemporary medicine, gender roles, and community norms, Tannenbaum also reveals the relationship between women's medical practice and witchcraft accusations. Tannenbaum examines colonial America's full range of medical options—including the work of classically trained male doctors and male lay practitioners—with a keen eye to the interactions and tensions between men and women in the realm of healing.
