Book Summary:

We all know eloquence when we hear it. But what exactly is it? And how might we gain more of it for ourselves? This entertaining and, yes, eloquent book illuminates the power of language from a linguistic point of view and provides fascinating insights into the way we use words. David Crystal, a world-renowned expert on the history and usage of the English language, probes the intricate workings of eloquence. His lively analysis encompasses everyday situations (wedding speeches, business presentations, storytelling) as well as the oratory of great public gatherings. Crystal focuses on the here and now of eloquent speaking—from pitch, pace, and prosody to jokes, appropriateness, and how to wield a microphone. He explains what is going on moment by moment and examines each facet of eloquence. He also investigates topics such as the way current technologies help or hinder our verbal powers, the psychological effects of verbal excellence, and why certain places or peoples are thought to be more eloquent than others. In the core analysis of the book, Crystal offers an extended and close dissection of Barack Obama’s electrifying “Yes we can” speech of 2008, in which the president demonstrated full mastery of virtually every element of eloquence—from the simple use of parallelism and an awareness of what not to say, to his brilliant conclusion constructed around two powerful words: dreams and answers.

Book Summary:

With illustrations by Terry Willers For the unprepared visitor Irish conversation can be a minefield. 'How's the craic ?' is not an assumption that you are well versed in the properties of narcotics substances, merely an enquiry after your health and general well-being. A seemingly easy question like 'You're not from around here are ye?' requires a far more detailed reply than 'No, I'm not'. In order not to be thought rude you should supply details of where you live, why you are in Ireland, the tiny village, now deserted, from which your great-great grandfather emigrated in the year dot, and, to be really accepted, your salary figure, marital status and daily eating habits! To the uninitiated, advice like this might seem extreme, but, as Tadhg Hayes points out, the proper answer will save you from insistent and repeated questioning, which, in the case of the Irish, is motivated by genuine interest and not just downright nosiness. Having safely negotiated the opening gambits, plenty of other conversational pitfalls await the visitor. GIFT OF THE GAB covers them all and will see you through any topic, from THE WEATHER, SPORT, DRINK, DEATH, how to interpret travel directions and statements on a person's financial situation (see THE POOR MOUTH). For Improvers there are useful phrases to add colour to your conversation, including the essential 'feck', 'fecking' and its variations. All in all, the most essential thing, after your umbrella, you will need for an enjoyable holiday in Ireland.

Book Summary:

Bruno Littlemore is quite unlike any chimpanzee in the world. Precocious, self-conscious and preternaturally gifted, young Bruno, born and raised in a habitat at the local zoo, falls under the care of a university primatologist named Lydia Littlemore. Learning of Bruno's ability to speak, Lydia takes Bruno into her home to oversee his education and nurture his passion for painting. But for all of his gifts, the chimpanzee has a rough time caging his more primal urges. His untimely outbursts ultimately cost Lydia her job, and send the unlikely pair on the road in what proves to be one of the most unforgettable journeys -- and most affecting love stories -- in recent literature. Like its protagonist, this novel is big, loud, abrasive, witty, perverse, earnest and amazingly accomplished. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore goes beyond satire by showing us not what it means, but what it feels like be human -- to love and lose, learn, aspire, grasp, and, in the end, to fail.

Book Summary:

ConflictThe Unexpected Gift Conflict between people can be defined as a difference that causes disagreements. Authors Jack Hamilton and Elisabeth Seaman go to the root of what causes conflict and how to rebuild relationships. Interpersonal conflicts permeate our lives. Sometimes we believe that another person treated us unfairly, and that assumption causes us to become angry at the person. Such conflicts in relationships often are intensified because of old patterns of thinking and behavior that have gotten out of hand. Becoming aware of someones true intentions, and the many factors that caused them to behave the way they did, as well as awareness of our own reactions, starts us on the path to mutual understanding and reconciliation. ConflictThe Unexpected Gift: Making the Most of Disputes in Life and Work suggests practical ways to honestly address, talk through and benefit from resolving conflicts. Every chapter has real-life accounts of peoples unresolved issues and the creative ways they resolved them. The book stresses the importance of knowing yourself, clarifying and letting go of unfounded assumptions, apologizing to heal old hurts and moving forward by not only repairing relationships, but also often improving them. Hamilton and Seaman wrote this book to give you the tools to talk through and mend unresolved issues that may have surfaced in your personal relationships.

Book Summary:

The Gift of Gab: A Collection of Recollections is a very appropriate choice for a title. I have good reason to believe that the art of storytelling is disappearing. This is my fi rst attempt at writing a book. I am hoping that in a small way, I will be able to reach out to people in order to convince them that there is signifi cant merit in being able to connect in a personal manner. A few years ago, I listened to a presentation on demographics. The delivery was very smooth and polished. The essential message was that the older generation was doing a poor job communicating with the youth. This new generation makes connections in an entirely different way than their parents. We were told that if we want to connect, we had to become familiar with the new communication vehicle, the electronic media. This is a generation of instant gratitude along with instant results. The use of cell phones, iPads, tablets, computers has become second nature to our youth. They can get answers very quickly simply by using Google. It has reached the point where writing and spelling have lost considerable value. We are encouraging a new generation that will develop muscular thumbs and a language that will be foreign to us. I do not pretend to have answers, nor do I believe that this change is necessarily a bad thing. However, I do believe that we have the power to enhance the connection with children at a very early age. We have an opportunity to preserve special moments by taking some time to read or tell stories that hold meaning for children when they are still young enough to believe. Sid Asselin was a master storyteller. I coached a lot of high school sports while living in Fort Frances. Our closest rival was one hundred kilometers away, four hundred kilometers for the most distant. On these trips, Sid was our driver, and he could stretch out a story for hours. This audience probably averaged sixteen years in age. They would get quite caught up in it all. I had two nieces and a nephew growing up in southern Ontario who believed that Uncle Jack lived in the wild woods of Ontario. When they were young, every visit I made led to the same requeststell us the story about how . . . saved your life. I had no idea at the time what kind of impact these stories would deliver. As young adults, they made a request to me to record on paper the substance and silliness that went into these tall tales. Now that they have young children of their own, I have a strong sense of the rationale for that request. I wish I could remember more of his stories, but the epic of a beaver, the blind moose, and the legend of Fallen Rock should adequately help fulfi ll my goal. This book should hold appeal for parents also because it does hold a few smatterings of how our own parents took liberty in stretching the truth in order to make a point. I hope that you enjoy this book and find motivation to share some stories of your own, true or nonsensical, with your children or grandchildren.
