Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 63: January 1844 to December 1864 I can imagine Pitt or Fox comin out of the House of Commons where they be struck their adversaries dumb b their eloquence, and enjoying a dinner-party. Can imagine Grattan amusing himself, after fifty ears of lory, play ing hide-and-seek with chi dren. Ut for an obscure and unknown individual, lost in the crowd of other men, or at the best numbered only among the litigant; who feel themselves obliged to wander every evenin into three or four houses where they are half sti ed under pretence of en joying themselves, I see neither leasure nor honor in it. I see only a culpable 053 of time, and mortal weariness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 63: January to June, 1896 It has been given to few to make so many discoveries of practical impor tance, after any one of which it might have been said he has deserved well of his country and paid his debt to man kind. He reformed the practice of vinegar-making and brewing, cured wine of its disorders, saved the silk industry not of France alone but of Europe, and showed how to drive out or to tame the germs of some of the most formidable diseases. But from the first, when he studied tartrates, to the last, when he wrestled with hydro phobia, his labors had two aspects practical importance and speculative interest; and while we recognize that no man of science has been of greater economic service to his country, we must not forget how he changed the whole theory of fermentation, and played at least an important part in establishing the germ theory of disease. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine: Of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art; January to April, 1861 Such is a brief sketch of the life and death of the divinity of the Druses - a blood-stained, capricious, im pious monster, whose career furnishes them with exam ples of almost every folly, excess, and crime that can disgrace humanity. The relentless cruelty which they have shown during the recent massacres is but the natural result of their false and impious creed - but an imitation of the intolerant and persecuting spirit displayed by their deity, more than eight centuries ago, in Egypt and Syria. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 25: January to April 1852 The splendid success of the Religio Med ici most likely took Browne by surprise. Though possessed of a modest sense of his own ability and a respectable independence of spirit, he was far above the arrogance of vanity. It may be believed that most writers who eventually attained great popularity, although they might have some instinctive consciousness of the power within them, were yet unable to guess exactly how, or when, it would receive a public recognition. They just let their inspiration have its utter ance. Nor (in many cases at least) could they subsequently tell with precision what it was in their writings which had fastened on them so universal a sympathy. The bond of attachment between an author and his reader may be too subtle for analysis. Perhaps, granting even a superabundance of genius, with all the acquired skill of practice. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: September to December, 1853 So great a work was never executed with slighter loss of human life, or smaller injury to a country. It was achieved by the will of one man, who was the representative of whatever was best and noblest in the people to whom he belonged and as in itself it was simple and straightforward, so of all great men in history there is not one whose charac ter is more simple and intelligible than that of John Knox. A plain but massive under standing, a courage which nothing could shake, a warm, honest heart, and an intense hatred and seem of sin these are the quali ties which appear in him; these, and only these. There may have been others, but the occasion did not require them, they were not called into play. The evil which was to be overcome had no strong intellectual de fences; it was a tyrannical falsehood. Upheld by force; and force of character, rather than breadth or subtlety of thought, was needed to cope with it. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: September to December, 1850 He had become so enamored of science that he resolved to devote his life to it. N o argu ment was of the least avail. The plan of taking orders was again urged by the mother, and the Bishop now sided with her; but the young gentleman had already adopted liberal notions on the subject of religion, and would on no account listen to them. In a letter to Turgot, of 17 7 5, he states that his creed was settled by the age of seventeen. He appears to have left the college in 1762, and an nounced his resolution to depend on his own resources - from which it may be inferred that he had seriously displeased the Bishop, though they became good friends afterward. The Biographie Universelle states that his earliest patron was the Duke de la Rochefou cauld. And that through his in uence he soon obtained some pensions but M. Arago, though he more than once describes the Duke as his best friend, makes no allusion to this circumstance of pensions, which, if true, is a rather important one. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 60: September to December, 1863 Again, we must not reckon the time it would have taken for the river to cut down a whole valley through the solid chalk; for we do not know that the solid chalk was there to be cut down. The valley might have been formed ages be fore, and filled with earlier alluvium, which would have readily yielded to water action. Nor are we to count the time necessary to raise the bottom of the valley (now covered with peat) above the level of the sea; for a river's mouth chok ed with sand-banks and lined with marsh es is the very place where peat would most rapidly grow. Nor need we include the ima na ages requisite to change a very co d c mate (evidenced b ice-action) to a much warmer one, (evi enced by an Asiatic shell, ) and then back again to that of temperate France. The ice-action is a mere conjecture, which is not confirmed by the presence of any specially Arctic shells; and, even if it were more probable, it would be quite as fair to weigh the two facts to ether, and conclude that greater heat ant? Greater cold united in a climate only removed by its want of equilibrium from that of France at present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 36: July to December, 1882 Mr. Lowell, in an interesting but rather tart essay, On a Certain Con descension in Foreigners, warns off Englishmen who may be_ disposed to write or speak about the United States Of America. I never blamed England for not wishing well to democracy, he cries how should she? But the criticisms and dealings of Englishmen, in regard to the object of their ill will, are apt, Mr. Lowell declares, to make him impatient. Let them give up trying to-understand us, still more thinking that they do, and acting in various ah surd ways as the necessary consequence; for they will never arrive at that devout ly to be wished consummation, till they learn to look at us as we are, and not as they suppose us to be. On the other hand, from some quar ters in America come reproaches to us for not speaking about America enough. Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: January to April, 1846 At the close of 1783, Mr. Hall received an invitation to become assistant pastor with Dr. Caleb Evans, at Broadmead, Bris tol. It was agreed, however, that he should return to his studies in Scotland during the college session of 1784-5. On settling at Bristol, his preaching elevated him to the height of popularity, being the evident product of a mind of extraordinary vigor and cultivation; yet was it deficient in evan gelical richness - a circumstance which none afterwards so deeply deplored as him self. Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: January to April, 1851 Ma. Trcxuoa's work offers another proof of the creditable desire felt by one great sec tion, at least, of America to discharge the debt due to Spain, her first discoverer. While the southern or Spanish States, in spite of more and stricter obligations, have folded their arms in indolent ingratitude, the northern and anglo-saxon portions, true to their race, have b n up and doing. From the Black Prince ownward, E land has been foremost with her best bl and brain to uphold her ally's independence in war, and to illustrate her marvels in peace; and the English sword has long been wreathed in Spanish myrtle. Neither have our transat lantic kinsmen degenerated - the names of Irving and Prescott are already associated with Columbus and Isabella; nor will Tick nor henceforward be forgotten where Cer vantes and his compeers are held in remem brance.
