Book Summary:

The Diary of a Nobody is the fictitious record of fifteen months in the life of Charles Pooter, his family, friends and small circle of acquaintances. It first appeared, serialised in Punch magazine and might be regarded as the first ‘blog’; being a record of the simplicities and humiliations in the life of this mundane, but upright, city clerk, who had an incontestable faith that a record of his daily life was worth preserving for posterity.

Book Summary:

The Diary of a Nobody is so unassuming a work that even its author, George Grossmith, seemed unaware that he had produced a masterpiece. For more than a century this wonderfully comic portrayal of suburban life and values has remained in print, a source of delight to generations of readers, and a major literary influence, much imitated but never equalled. I fail to see - because I do not happen to be a 'Somebody' - why my diary should not be interesting. Mr Pooter is a man of modest ambitions, content with his ordinary life. Yet he always seems to be troubled by disagreeable tradesmen, impertinent young office clerks and wayward friends, not to mention his devil-may-care son Lupin with his unsuitable choice of bride. Try as he might, he cannot avoid life's embarrassing mishaps. In the bumbling, absurd, yet ultimately endearing figure of Pooter, the Grossmiths created an immortal comic character and a superb satire on the snobberies of middle-class suburbia - one which also sends up late Victorian crazes for spiritualism and bicycling, as well as the fashion for publishing diaries by anybody and everybody.

Book Summary:

Excerpt from The Diary of a Nobody It would be presumption for a writer of humble attainments to add anything to the splendid eulogy which Lord Rosebery has penned on the merits of The Diary of a Nobody. That the book has run through so many editions is proof conclusive the public have fully appreciated its delicate irony and subtle humour. But if it be a work of supererogation to dwell on the charm of the Diary itself, there is scope for discourse in the lives of its authors, George and Weedon Grossmith. Both have passed away, one but quite recently, leaving behind them a record of honourable work and distinguished achievement. Both found their ultimate art medium by a process of evolution - the elder through the Press entrance to the Bow Street Police Court, the other by way of the South Kensington Art Schools. Book Summary:

The Diary of a Nobody is an English comic novel, serialised in Punch magazine, and written by George and Weedon Grossmith. The Diary records the daily events in the lives of a London clerk, Charles Pooter, his wife Carrie, his son Lupin, and their numerous friends and acquaintances, over a period of 15 months. Charles had a difficult relationship with his 20 year old son Lupin. The Diary of Nobody's Son gives Lupin's side of the story. i wish Pa hadn't called his book The Diary of a Nobody. There's a selfish reason; it makes me out to be nobody's son, in fact, nobody's only son; which makes me sound like I am less than nothing. But there's also an unselfish reason. Pa had his moments when he was nothing like a nobody or, to be positive, something like a somebody. This book is partly Pa's and partly mine as I comment on his diary - and especially on what it says about me. It's a dialogue between him and me, a dialogue we never had in real life because it would have been too difficult. The Diary of Nobody's Son deals with their rows about money, Lupin's love life, Lupin's dress sense and the fact that Lupin thinks little of his father's boss, Mr Perkupp (whom Lupin's father idolises). The Diary came to be recognised by critics as a classic work of humour. Lupin's answer is a gem that answers a gem. Witty, unexpected, and even wise in places.
