Book Summary:

Sulphur Springs is the story of the friendship of two women who come from very different backgrounds. They meet by chance in Sheridan, Wyoming in 1895. Duha (pronounced DooHa) is the daughter of a slave midwife. Her mother and she are determined to escape the racism in Independence, Missouri, by migrating to Washington State. But her mother dies in Sheridan, Wyoming, leaving Duha with no money, no job and no future but to work in the brothels outside of town. She meets Georgia Prentice, a nurse in the hospital where her mother dies. Georgia takes her in and, together, they begin a life together that spans sixty years and three generations.Sulphur Springs is historical fiction which describes the lives, loves, children and friends of three generations as they struggle to settle and survive in the American Northwest. The story unfolds against the backdrop of two world wars and the Great Depression then ends with all of them coming together one last time to confront a psychotic rapist/murderer who endangers the lives of their children.I spent a lot of time researching midwifery for this book. Many thanks to Anne Frye for her help. Holistic medicine also played a large part in pioneer life since there were just no doctors available for many pioneers. I tried to incorporate as much of what I learned as possible into the story line. The people of White Pass Museum in Packwood, Washington, were also very helpful. They proof read my early manuscripts and corrected local facts about Lewis Country, Sulphur Springs, and Packwood that I had gotten mixed up.Roy Wilson, Chairman of the Cowlitz Indians, was a superb source of information about life as a Cowlitz Indian at the end of the 19th century. His descriptions of the cedar houses and tribal mores were invaluable.I live in Ariel, Washington, with my wife, two horses, a llama, three dogs and three cats. Book Summary:

“Archaeomineralogy” provides a wealth of information for mineralogists, geologists and archaeologists involved in archaeometric studies. The first edition was very well-received and praised for its systematic description of the rocks and minerals used throughout the world by our ancestors and for its excellent list of over 900 references, providing easy access to the fields of archaeomineralogy and geoarchaeology. This second edition of “Archaeomineralogy” takes an updated and expanded look at the human use of rocks and minerals from the Paleolithic through to the 18th century CE. It retains the structure and main themes of the original but has been revised and expanded with more than 200 new references within the text, a bibliography of additional references not included in the text, a dozen new figures (drawings and photos), coverage of many additional important mineral, rock, and gem materials, a broader geographic scope, particularly but not limited to Eastern Europe, and a more thorough review of early contributions to archaeomineralogy, especially those of Agricola. From reviews of the first edition: "... crammed full of useful information, is well-balanced using both new and Old World examples of the archaeomaterials described. It also provides a broad, but of necessity, all too brief overview of the geological raw materials used in antiquity." -- Geoscientist "...provides much interesting discussion of how particular names came to be employed by archaeologists working in different regions of the world.... much to offer for any geologist or archaeologist interested in minerals and rocks and how they have been used in the past." -- Mineralium Deposita "... a gem of a book, it's strength is that it is encyclopedic in content, if not in layout, draws on a wealth of field experience and almost every sentence contains a nugget of information" -- The Holocene

Book Summary:

In 1540 Francisco Vázquez de Coronado, the governor of Nueva Galicia in western Mexico, led an expedition of reconnaissance and expansion to a place called Cíbola, far to the north in what is now New Mexico. The essays collected in this book bring multidisciplinary expertise to the study of that expedition. Although scholars have been examining the Coronado expedition for over 460 years, it left a rich documentary record that still offers myriad research opportunities from a variety of approaches. Volume contributors are from a range of disciplines including history, archaeology, Latin American studies, anthropology, astronomy, and geology. Each addresses as aspect of the Coronado Expedition from the perspectives of his/her field, examining topics that include analyses of Spanish material culture in the New World; historical documentation of finances, provisioning, and muster rolls; Spanish exploration in the Borderlands; Native American contact with Spanish explorers; and determining the geographic routes of the Expedition.

Book Summary:

Strategically located at the joining of the Hudson and Hoosac Rivers, Stillwater was the site of the Battles of Saratoga in 1777, which took place in the northern part of the town and led to the defeat of the British during the Revolutionary War. Stillwater became an official town on March 7, 1788, and the village was later incorporated in 1816. During the 19th century, the opening of the canals along the Hudson River spurred industry in the community. The town was also an educational center, with Stillwater Academy that flourished for many years. By the 20th century, Stillwater residents became more mobile, finding work outside town, and the mills and factories began to close. Today Stillwater is known as a bedroom community with a bright future.

Book Summary:

After the phone call Jessica ran back over to Alexis and Autumn and placed her hands together in a begging fashion, "Can we please, please, please go to that swimming pool we passed? You know the one with the diving boards and water slides." Autumn looked over at Alexis, "Well, what do you think?" Alexis looked up at the sky, "I don't see any clouds, so it's alright by me. Somehow I knew that would be the first place she wanted to go. Jess I swear you and Payton were born with gills. I never could keep you girls out of the water." Jessica brought up the time they went swimming at the lake and Payton covered herself in mud from the lake bottom and walked around like a sea monster scaring the smaller kids at the beach. It was unlike Payton, she usually was so prim and proper with her nails perfectly manicured and not a hair out of place. They walked toward the elevator laughing at all the good times that they had shared, and headed back to their rooms and change into their swimsuits. Jessica placed her hands together again in a begging fashion, "After were done swimming can we go horseback riding? I have not been riding since we have moved to Atlanta." Autumn and Alexis nodded yes. Jessica got excited and took off in hurry toward the elevator, "Payton would love this place!" Autumn and Alexis were talking about the tour as they walked toward the elevator dragging their feet. Alexis looked up and Jessica was bent down holding her shin and rubbing it at the elevator, "What's wrong with you?" Jessica whimpered and her blond hair fell in her face, "My leg, it feels like someone just kicked me!" Alexis and Autumn bent down to look at Jessica's leg. There was a large red mark. Autumn stood up, "Jessica what did you run into?" Jessica whined, "Nothing, I didn't run into anything mom. I pushed the elevator button and I was standing right here holding this elevator for you guys. That's when it felt like someone kicked me in the shin." Autumn looked around, "Honey nobodies here but you. Did you run into that bench over there?" Jessica stood up straight and pointed to the ground, "I was standing right here! I was nowhere near that bench!" Jessica stepped away from the elevator she was holding and the doors closed. Jessica shook her leg and walked into another elevator that arrived on the ground level, "I am alright, let's just get our suits on and go swimming." They went back to their rooms, changed into their swimsuits and met back at the elevator. Jessica of course was the first one ready and waiting at the elevator. Alexis was the second one there. Alexis looked down at Jessica's leg and noticed that it had started to bruise, "How's your leg feel?" Jessica quickly changed the subject, "It's fine, where's mom? I can't wait to get on those diving boards!" Autumn walked out of her room with her towels in one hand and sun block in the other. The elevator door opened and they headed down to the bottom floor. When they exited the elevator they noticed that maintenance men had placed caution tape over the one that Jessica had been standing at when she claimed to have been kicked. Alexis approached the workers, "Is this elevator out of order?" The men working looked very serious, "Yeah, it won't be working for awhile. It seems that while it was empty the cable snapped. Nobody was hurt thank god." Alexis was extremely unnerved by this and was extremely grateful that Jess hadn't gotten on. She hurried to catch up with Autumn and Jessica as they continued toward the pool. When they walked into the pool area Autumn and Alexis sat down in lounge chairs while Jessica ran straight for the diving board, "Hey guys, watch this!" Jessica ran to the end of the diving board and did a perfect dive into the water. When she surfaced she swam to the side and climbed out to do it again. Autumn and Alexis were reclining back enjoying the sun while Jessica continued running back to the diving board. Jessica did another dive and

Book Summary:

1.1 Prologue What is archaeomineralogy? The term has been used at least once before (Mitchell 1985), but this volume is the first publication to lay down the scientific basis and systematics for this subdiscipline. Students sometimes call an introductory archaeology course "stones and bones." Archaeomineralogy covers the stones component of this phrase. Of course, archaeology consists of a great deal more than just stones and bones. Contemporary archaeology is based on stratigraphy, geomorphology, chronometry, behavioral inferences, and a host of additional disciplines in addition to those devoted to stones and bones. To hazard a definition: archaeomineralogy is the study of the minerals and rocks used by ancient societies over space and time, as implements, orna ments, building materials, and raw materials for ceramics and other processed products. Archaeomineralogy also attempts to date, source, or otherwise char acterize an artifact or feature, or to interpret past depositional alteration of archaeological contexts. Unlike geoarchaeology, archaeomineralogy is not, and is not likely to become, a recognized subdiscipline. Practitioners of archaeomineralogy are mostly geoarchaeologists who specialize in geology and have a strong background in mineralogy or petrology (the study of the origin ofrocks).

Book Summary:

We are most gratified by the response to the initiation of this series of volumes presenting recent developments and new concepts in microbial ecology. Favorable reactions have been expressed in both oral and written communication, and Ad vances in Microbial Ecology thus seems to be providing a worthwhile outlet in a rapidly growing field of microbiology and environmental sciences. The growing importance of microbial ecology is evident in many ways. Uni versity personnel are expanding their programs and increasing the number of research topics and publications. Substantial numbers of industrial scientists have likewise entered this field as they consider the microbial transformation of chemicals in waters and soils and the effects of synthetic compounds on natural microbial communities. Agricultural, medical, dental, and veterinary practitioners and scientists have also been increasing their activity in microbial ecology because of the importance of the discipline to their own professions. In addition, govern mental agencies have expanded regulatory and research activities concerned with microbial ecology owing to the importance of information and regulations fo cused on the interactions between microorganisms in nature and particular en vironmental stresses.
