This Note briefly describes the matching process. The major emphasis is in describing the elements of the matching process--the scene, matching algorithms, and errors--and determining their roles in and effect on the matching process. A means is provided for structuring the map matching problem. Thescene is defined by the degree of homogeneity and the number of independent elements in each homogeneous region. The errors are further broken up into categories which are mutually exclusive, comprehensive, and positively related to a preprocessing technique or algorithm required to accommodate them. The errors are thus broken up into one of the following categories: global, regional, local, and nonstructured. Finally, the matching algorithms are defined as being of a feature matching correlation or hybrid type. The latter type is a new glass of algorithm developed at Rand which bridges the gap between feature matching and correlation types of algorithms. (Author).

In the machine learning community, one of the most widely known - search problems addressed in DAR is recognition of unconstrained handwr- ten characters which has been frequently used in the past as a benchmark for evaluating machine learning algorithms, especially supervised classi?ers. However, developing a DAR system is a complex engineering task that involves the integration of multiple techniques into an organic framework. A reader may feel that the use of machine learning algorithms is not approp- ate for other DAR tasks than character recognition. On the contrary, such algorithms have been massively used for nearly all the tasks in DAR. With large emphasis being devoted to character recognition and word recognition, other tasks such as pre-processing, layout analysis, character segmentation, and signature veri?cation have also bene?ted much from machine learning algorithms.

The earlier workshops, SAMOS I–IV (2001–2004), were composed only of invited presentations. Due to increasing expressions of interest in the workshop, the Program Committee of SAMOS V decided to open the workshop for all submissions. As a result the SAMOS workshop gained an immediate popularity; a total of 114 submitted papers were received for evaluation.
