Book Summary:

This book addresses how our revisionary practices account for relations between texts and how they are read. It offers an overarching philosophy of revision concerning works of fiction, fact, and faith, revealing unexpected insights about the philosophy of language, the metaphysics of fact and fiction, and the history and philosophy of science and religion. Using the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien as exemplars, the authors introduce a fundamental distinction between the purely physical and the linguistic aspects of texts. They then demonstrate how two competing theories of reference—descriptivism and referentialism—are instead constitutive of a single semantic account needed to explain all kinds of revision. The authors also propose their own metaphysical foundations of fiction and fact. The next part of the book brings the authors’ philosophy of revision into dialogue with Thomas Kuhn’s famous analysis of factual, and specifically scientific, change. It also discusses a complex episode in the history of paleontology, demonstrating how scientific and popular texts can diverge over time. Finally, the authors expand their philosophy of revision to religious texts, arguing that, rather than being distinct, such texts are always read as other kinds, that faith tends to be more important as evidence for religious texts than for others, and that the latter explains why religious communities tend to have remarkable historical longevity. Revising Fiction, Fact, and Faith offers a unique and comprehensive account of the philosophy of revision. It will be of interest to a wide range of scholars and advanced students working in philosophy of language, metaphysics, philosophy of literature, literary theory and criticism, and history and philosophy of science and religion.

Book Summary:

In this posthumous book, the late Professor R. Hooykaas (1906-1994) conveys a lifetime of historical thought about modes of scientific advance over the centuries. In what variety of ways has the human mind, with all its subjectivity and its capacity for self-deception, but also its piercing gifts of discovery, managed to come to terms with `the whimsical tricks of nature'? Central to this erudite, penetrating, and widely ranging study is Hooykaas's distinction between facts (given by nature yet entirely subject to our mode of interpreting them), faith (broad conceptions like the idea of order, of simplicity, or of harmony), and fictions in the sense of those daring intellectual tools, such as theories and hypotheses and models, which reflect the scientist's creative imagination. Case studies drawn from the history of all branches of science (including chemistry and the earth sciences) and from Antiquity to the present day, serve to widen and to deepen the understanding of every reader (whether a historian of science or not) with a desire to learn more about the realities of the scientific pursuit.

Book Summary:

The author develops the problem of God in a stimulating way, by exploring science, philosophy, history, and other disciplines. He concludes that God does not exist because the supernatural does not exist – and therefore God, an entity of the supernatural, also does not exist. He regards religion as the biggest hoax ever released on mankind. With his great erudition and critical reasoning, he will incite the reader to serious thought. The controversial topic will provoke a great deal of criticism and perhaps consequently contribute to clarification of the God’s problem. The main concern of the author remains the quest for truth from every possible angle. The book is a modern testament.

Book Summary:

Faith and Fiction is a collection of essays which partly stems from the 25th LAUD-Symposium on 'Metaphor and Religion' (University of Duisburg, April 1-5, 1997). It investigates the relationship between religious experience and the use of metaphors and thus explores the tensions between faith and fiction. Herein, special attention is paid to the type of situation in which the confrontation of a community or an individual with religion is not self-evident or even discordant. In order to address the diversity of the problem area, the volume opts for an interdisciplinary approach. Section I analyses 'religious metaphors' from the viewpoint of contemporary linguistics. In section II, the significance of metaphors in a 'meta-religious' discourse is considered. The philosophical dialogue with religion and metaphor is discussed in section III, and the final section submits religious poems to a formal and interpretative examination.
