Book Summary:

Life Sciences and Space Research, Volume XVII contains the proceedings of the Open Meeting of the Working Group on Space Biology of the Twenty-first Plenary Meeting of COSPAR, held in Innsbruck, Austria, from May 29 to June 10, 1978 and of the Symposium on Gravitational Physiology which also took place in Innsbruck, Austria, on June 2 and 3, 1978. The papers review the results of research in the life sciences with respect to space biology, including chemical data returned from the Viking Lander experiments. The engineering design of biologically closed ecological systems suitable for very long term space flight or space colonies is also described. This volume is comprised of 41 chapters and begins with a discussion on closed regenerative life support systems for space travel and their implications for ecological science. Subsequent chapters examine closed ecology in space from a bioengineering perspective; technology requirements for nonterrestrial ecosystems; carbon suboxide polymer as an explanation for the wave of darkening observed on Mars; and volcanism and soil mercury on Mars, along with their consequences for terrestrial microorganisms. The next sections focus on the biology of extreme environments such as Central Antarctica, radiation biology in space, and gravitational physiology in relation to humans and animals. This book will be of interest to space scientists, space biologists, and those engaged in the life sciences, space research, molecular biophysics, biochemistry, and physiology.

Book Summary:

At the start of the twenty-first century, warnings have been raised in some quarters about how - by intent or by mishap - advances in biotechnology and related fields could aid the spread of disease. Science academics, medical organisations, governments, security analysts, and others are among those that have sought to raise concern. EDUCATION AND ETHICS IN THE LIFE SCIENCES examines a variety of attempts to bring greater awareness to security concerns associated with the life sciences. It identifies lessons from practical initiatives across a wide range of national contexts as well as more general reflections about education and ethics. The eighteen contributors bring together perspectives from a diverse range of fields - including politics, virology, sociology, ethics, security studies, microbiology, and medicine - as well as their experiences in universities, think tanks and government. In offering their assessment about what must be done and by whom, each chapter addresses a host of challenging practical and conceptual questions. EDUCATION AND ETHICS IN THE LIFE SCIENCES will be of interest to those planning and undertaking training activities in other areas. In asking how education and ethics are being made to matter in an emerging area of social unease, it will also be of interest to those with more general concerns about professional conduct.

Book Summary:

Miniaturization in the fields of chemistry and molecular biology has resulted in the "lab-on-a-chip." Such systems are micro-fabricated devices capable of handling extremely small fluid volumes facilitating the scaling of single or multiple lab processes down to a microchip-sized format. The convergence of lab-on-a-chip technology with the field of cell biology facilitated the development of "organ-on-a-chip" systems. Such systems simulate the function of tissues and organs, having the potential to bypass some cell and animal testing methods. These technologies have generated high interest as applications for disease modeling and drug discovery. This book, edited by Drs. Sean Murphy and Anthony Atala, provides a comprehensive coverage of the technologies that have been used to develop organ-on-a-chip systems. Known leaders cover the basics to the most relevant and novel topics in the field, including micro-fabrication, 3D bio-printing, 3D cell culture techniques, biosensor design and microelectronics, micro-fluidics, data collection, and predictive analysis. The book describes specific tissue types amenable for disease modeling and drug discovery applications. Lung, liver, heart, skin and kidney "on-a-chip" technologies are included as well as a progress report on designing an entire "body-on-a-chip" system. Additionally, the book covers applications of various systems for modeling tissue-specific cancers, metastasis, and tumor microenvironments; and provides an overview of current and potential applications of these systems to disease modeling, toxicity testing, and individualized medicine.

Book Summary:

This document presents the proceedings of the Reinvention Center's second major conference, "Integrating Research into Undergraduate Education: The Value Added," co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The goal of the conference was to distill the distinct characteristics of the educational experience research universities can offer and to articulate the "value added" of such an experience to undergraduates so that it is readily comprehended. The conference was organized around three plenary sessions, each of which probed an aspect of the overall theme. These sessions were followed by meetings in which small groups examined issues raised by the speakers from institutional and disciplinary perspectives. Some of the questions probed at the conference included: (1) Based on their singular assets, what is the unique educational experience research universities can offer? (2) How can universities integrate their dual missions of "knowledge creation" and "knowledge transmission" in order to enrich and give new meaning to their undergraduate programs? and (3) How can research universities communicate the value of a research-infused education to their diverse constituencies? Presenter biographies and an index are included. Individual presentation summaries contain resources/references. (Contains 43 figures, 2 photographs, and 5 tables.) [This report was produced by the Reinvention Center at Stony Brook.].

Book Summary:

This annual edition presents the most recent statistics since 1990 of over 80 health indicators for WHO's 193 Member States. This fourth edition includes an expanded set of over 76 key indicators and a section with 10 highlights in global health statistics in the past year. This book has been collated from publications and databases of WHO's technical programmes and regional offices. The core set of indicators was selected on the basis of relevance for global health, availability and quality of data, and accuracy and comparability of estimates. The statistics for the indicators are based on an interactive process of data collection, compilation, quality assessment, and estimation between WHO technical programmes and its Member States. In this process, WHO strives to maximize accessibility, accuracy, comparability, and transparency of country health statistics. In addition to national statistics, this publication presents statistics on the inequalities in health outcomes and interventions coverage within countries, disaggregated by urban/rural setting, wealth/assets, and educational level. Such statistics are primarily derived from the analysis of household surveys and are only available for a limited number of countries.

Book Summary:

When is it appropriate to return individual research results to participants? The immense interest in this question has been fostered by the growing movement toward greater transparency and participant engagement in the research enterprise. Yet, the risks of returning individual research resultsâ€"such as results with unknown validityâ€"and the associated burdens on the research enterprise are competing considerations. Returning Individual Research Results to Participants reviews the current evidence on the benefits, harms, and costs of returning individual research results, while also considering the ethical, social, operational, and regulatory aspects of the practice. This report includes 12 recommendations directed to various stakeholdersâ€"investigators, sponsors, research institutions, institutional review boards (IRBs), regulators, and participantsâ€"and are designed to help (1) support decision making regarding the return of results on a study-by-study basis, (2) promote high-quality individual research results, (3) foster participant understanding of individual research results, and (4) revise and harmonize current regulations.

Book Summary:

How can we accelerate the development of vaccines? How do we feed three billion people when 12 million died of hunger in 2019? Does synthetic biology hold the answer? With all the advances in science in the last century, why are there still so many infectious diseases? Why haven’t we found cures for difficult cancers? Why hasn’t any major progress been made in the treatment of mental illness? And how do we intend to stop, and not only that but reverse, global warming and the climate crisis? In Saved by Science, scientist Mark Poznansky examines the many crises facing humanity while encouraging us with the promise of an emerging solution: synthetic biology. This is the science of building simple organisms, or “biological apps,” to make manufacturing greener energy production more sustainable, agriculture more robust, and medicine more powerful and precise. Synthetic biology is the marriage of the digital revolution with a revolution in biology and genomics; some have even called it “the fourth industrial revolution.” Accessible and informative, Saved by Science provides readers with hope for the future if we trust in and support the future of science.

Book Summary:

In 2003 the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) published its first white paper on the UK's international priorities, and has reviewed that paper every two years to ensure it remained relevant. This paper updates the analysis and establishes a new range of strategic priorities. Chapter 1 considers the trends driving global change over the next decade and how they will affect the UK: economics; demography and migration; resource pressures; climate change; religion and identity; poverty and governance; security and conflict; science and innovation. The next chapter looks at the UK's role in the international system and the key partnerships. This covers the United Nations, multilateral economic institutions such as the World Bank, the G8 and OECD, the Commonwealth and the European Union (EU), and relationships with the United States, China, India, Japan and Russia, and countries with important regional roles such as Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia. Chapter 3 outlines the nine strategic international priorities identified: (1) making the world safer from global terrorism and weapons of mass destruction; (2) reducing the harm from international crime, including drug and people trafficking, and money laundering; (3) preventing and resolving conflict through a strong international system; (4) building an effective and globally competitive EU; (5) supporting the UK economy through the global economy, science and innovation, and secure energy supplies; (6) promoting sustainable development and poverty reduction, underpinned by human rights, democracy, good governance and protection of the environment; (7) managing migration and combating illegal immigration; (8) delivering high-quality support for British nationals abroad; (9) ensuring the security and good governance of the UK's overseas territories. Chapter 4 sets out the role of the FCO in pursuing these priorities, and an annex gives specific aims for each strategic priority.
