Food is in short supply; opportunities for earning money for housing and clothing are virtually non-existent. Ivans only option is escape to the West.Ivan makes his desperate bid for freedom and embarks on a dangerous journey to the West. When he gets there, he finds that freedom is still just beyond his grasp as he is imprisoned as a suspected Bulgarian spy. He finally makes his way to a refugee camp, where conditions are nearly identical to the oppression from which he is trying to escape. Yet the desire to a live free and prosperous life burns strong in Ivan and finds his way to the United States. Once he arrives, he finds himself facing more obstacles. He speaks on English and has no training, yet perseveres and creates for himself not only a successful career, but a happy family who can live the American Dream.
