Book Summary:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Lucid and wrenching...Forward puts [Wambach's] achievement in context with painful and beautiful candor." —NPR "Forward is the powerful story of an athlete who has inspired girls all over the world to believe in themselves." —Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, New York Times Bestselling author of Lean In “This is the best memoir I’ve read by an athlete since Andre Agassi’s Open.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take Abby Wambach has always pushed the limits of what is possible. At age seven she was put on the boys’ soccer team. At age thirty-five she would become the highest goal scorer—male or female—in the history of soccer, capturing the nation’s heart with her team’s 2015 World Cup Championship. Called an inspiration and “badass” by President Obama, Abby has become a fierce advocate for women’s rights and equal opportunity, pushing to translate the success of her team to the real world. As she reveals in this searching memoir, Abby’s professional success often masked her inner struggle to reconcile the various parts of herself: ferocious competitor, daughter, leader, wife. With stunning candor, Abby shares her inspiring and often brutal journey from girl in Rochester, New York, to world-class athlete. Far more than a sports memoir, Forward is gripping tale of resilience and redemption—and a reminder that heroism is, above all, about embracing life’s challenges with fearlessness and heart.

Book Summary:

New York Times Best Seller 2015 RFK Book Awards Special Recognition 2015 Lillian Smith Book Award 2015 AAUP Books Committee "Outstanding" Title Based on more than eighty interviews, this fast-paced, richly detailed biography of Perry Wallace, the first African American basketball player in the SEC, digs deep beneath the surface to reveal a more complicated and profound story of sports pioneering than we've come to expect from the genre. Perry Wallace's unusually insightful and honest introspection reveals his inner thoughts throughout his journey. Wallace entered kindergarten the year that Brown v. Board of Education upended "separate but equal." As a 12-year-old, he sneaked downtown to watch the sit-ins at Nashville's lunch counters. A week after Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, Wallace entered high school, and later saw the passage of the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. On March 16, 1966, his Pearl High School basketball team won Tennessee's first integrated state tournament--the same day Adolph Rupp's all-white Kentucky Wildcats lost to the all-black Texas Western Miners in an iconic NCAA title game. The world seemed to be opening up at just the right time, and when Vanderbilt recruited him, Wallace courageously accepted the assignment to desegregate the SEC. His experiences on campus and in the hostile gymnasiums of the Deep South turned out to be nothing like he ever imagined. On campus, he encountered the leading civil rights figures of the day, including Stokely Carmichael, Martin Luther King Jr., Fannie Lou Hamer, and Robert Kennedy--and he led Vanderbilt's small group of black students to a meeting with the university chancellor to push for better treatment. On the basketball court, he experienced an Ole Miss boycott and the rabid hate of the Mississippi State fans in Starkville. Following his freshman year, the NCAA instituted "the Lew Alcindor rule," which deprived Wallace of his signature move, the slam dunk. Despite this attempt to limit the influence of a rising tide of black stars, the final basket of Wallace's college career was a cathartic and defiant dunk, and the story Wallace told to the Vanderbilt Human Relations Committee and later The Tennessean was not the simple story of a triumphant trailblazer that many people wanted to hear. Yes, he had gone from hearing racial epithets when he appeared in his dormitory to being voted as the university's most popular student, but, at the risk of being labeled "ungrateful," he spoke truth to power in describing the daily slights and abuses he had overcome and what Martin Luther King had called "the agonizing loneliness of a pioneer."

Why this book? Barack Obamas life has been the subject of endless news reports, blogs, memoirs, and case histories. And yet at a deeper personal level, he has remained an enigma, a riddle, a person shrouded in mystery and mystique. There is a need for something definite and specific: a constructive setting forth of reality and truth. That reality and truth is embalmed in the antiseptic pages of this book.

Book Summary:

After 2007, countries that cut their policy interest rates close to zero turned, among other policies, to forward guidance. We estimate a two-country model of the U.S. and Canada to quantify how unexpected changes in U.S. forward guidance affected Canada. Expansionary U.S. forward guidance shocks, like conventional policy shocks, are beggar-thy-neighbor and depress Canadian output, but by twice as much as conventional shocks. We find that the effect of U.S. forward guidance shocks on Canadian output, unlike conventional policy shocks, depends on the state of U.S. demand and can be five times smaller when U.S. demand is weak.

Book Summary:

The decades separating our new century from the Armenian Genocide, the prototype of modern-day nation-killings, have fundamentally changed the political composition of the region. Virtually no Armenians remain on their historic territories in what is today eastern Turkey. The Armenian people have been scattered about the world. And a small independent republic has come to replace the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which was all that was left of the homeland as the result of Turkish invasion and Bolshevik collusion in 1920. One element has remained constant. Notwithstanding the eloquent, compelling evidence housed in the United States National Archives and repositories around the world, successive Turkish governments have denied that the predecessor Young Turk regime committed genocide, and, like the Nazis who followed their example, sought aggressively to deflect blame by accusing the victims themselves. This volume argues that the time has come for Turkey to reassess the propriety of its approach, and to begin the process that will allow it move into a post-genocide era. The work includes “Genocide: An Agenda for Action,” Gijs M. de Vries; “Determinants of the Armenian Genocide,” Donald Bloxham; “Looking Backward and Forward,” Joyce Apsel; “The United States Response to the Armenian Genocide,” Simon Payaslian; “The League of Nations and the Reclamation of Armenian Genocide Survivors,” Vahram L. Book Summary:

Let Go of What Holds You Back and Fulfill God's Purpose Far too many people are not living up to God's best for them, limited by habits and hang-ups from which they just can't seem to break free. Unforgiveness, addictive behavior, unhealthy financial patterns--limitations come in all shapes and sizes. Breaking free from any of them starts the same way: by walking in the truth. Jesus died on the cross to set us free and enable us to experience life to the full; anything less than that is not God's best. If we are followers of Christ, freedom is not just a benefit to embrace if we choose; it's a responsibility we are called to. Pastor and author John Siebeling helps readers connect the dots between what they read in God's Word and their everyday lives. Each chapter highlights a specific hang-up or habit that holds people back, explains what God says about it, and points to a way forward in freedom. Practical advice and suggestions for next steps help readers see how to implement changes that give them the traction they need to move forward.

Book Summary:

A guide to wave-field computational methods based on contrast source type of integral equations Forward and Inverse Scattering Algorithms Based on Contrast Source Integral Equations presents a text that examines wave-field computational methods based on contrast source type of integral equations and the computational implementation in wave-field based imaging methods. Written by a noted expert on the topic, the book provides a guide to efficient methods for calculating wave fields in a known inhomogeneous medium. The author provides a link between the fundamental scattering theory and its discrete counterpart and discusses the forward scattering problem based on the contrast-source integral equations. The book fully describes the calculation of wave fields inside and outside a scattering object with general shape and material property and reviews the inverse scattering problem, in which material properties are resolved from wave-field measurements outside the scattering object. The theoretical approach is the inverse of the forward scattering problem that determines how radiation is scattered, based on the scattering object. This important book: Provides a guide to the effects of scalar waves, acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves Describes computer modeling in 1D, 2D and 3D models Includes an online site for computer codes with adjustable configurations Written for students, researchers, and professionals, Forward and Inverse Scattering Algorithms Based on Contrast Source Integral Equations offers a guide to wave-field computational methods based on contrast source type of integral equations and the computational implementation in wave-field based imaging methods.

Book Summary:

Field tests of a forward scatter visibility instrument were carried out in August 1970 at Cutler, Maine. The performance characteristics of the new instrument were examined through comparisons of simultaneous measurements of atmospheric extinction coefficient with a conventional transmissometer and through comparisons with human observations of visibility. During periods of dense coastal advection fog, which restricted visibility to less than one mile, the correlations coefficient between forward scatter and transmissometer measurements was about 0.91 with a standard error of estimate of 26 percent. The disparities between simultaneous measurements were caused primarily by high frequency fluctuations in fog density that were detected by the small volume measurements with the forward scatter instrument, but were smoothed out by the measurements of transmittance over a baseline of 500 ft. Additional comparisons of forward scatter measurements and transmittance measurements in winter snow situations gave results similar to those obtained in fog conditions. (Author).

Book Summary:

The leading companies of the past twenty years have all harnessed the power of information to gain competitive advantage. But as access to big data becomes ubiquitous, it can no longer guarantee a leg up. Fast/Forward makes the case that we are entering a new era in which firms that understand the limits of 1s and 0s will take the lead. Whereas the industrial age saw the rise of bureaucracy, and the information age has been described as a meritocracy, we are witnessing the rise of adhocracy. In uncertain, rapidly-changing times, adhocracic organizations scan the horizon for winning opportunities. Then, instead of questing after more analysis, they respond with agility by making smart, intuitive decisions. Combining decisive action with emotional conviction, future-facing firms seize the day. Fast/Forward paints the big picture of a new approach to strategy and provides the necessary playbook to make your company fit for the future.

Book Summary:

An ex-colleague, a school librarian, once told me, much to my surprise, that quite a lot of children came into the library at lunch-time to read plays, but that there were not so many available. I therefore offer this set of 5 plays partially to fill the gap, whether merely for reading or even for performing. They range from the first two fairly simple ones, 'The Vase' and 'Neighbours' to the more complicated such as' Aline's Dream' and 'Mr. Far West'. You may note some familiar themes, which I may deliberately or not have borrowed. Aline is definitely not Dorothy, although 'Little Red Robin Hood' and 'Little Horrors' echo some of the ideas in my straightforward stories in 'Colin the Librarian'. The plays may sometimes seem to have serious ideas, such as loyalty and betrayal, but generally they are tongue-in-cheek and intended as (hopefully) a bit of fun. My own favourites are the rather spare 'Pythonesque', and to my mind, especially 'The Haunted Bedroom' with its spooky ending. However, I humbly offer them for you (once again hopefully) to enjoy.

Book Summary:

CHAPTER THREE FEARS Have you ever found yourself convincing yourself why you should not embark on some new enterprise or another. How often do you do this, is it a habit with you. In other words you are not in the habit of always telling yourself why you should try a lot of new ventures, rather you do the opposite and worse still you even do it to your friends. You always discourage your friends from trying something new and you may not even know it seeing it has become such a part of you. Did you know this is based on your inner fears? Do not worry because we all have them and it is because so much garbage has been programmed into our lives over the years from our birth by society or by bad influence and it continues to happen everyday. It is reality for you when you have lived a certain experience, no one can tell you it did not happen when it happened to you. Let us look at an example of how our mind convinces us even when we may not be very conscious it is happening. Did you know that as real as something may seem to you, it may also be a lie in fact most of the time when there is no factual evidence to disprove it then it is a lie and we buy into this lie. You had an opportunity to get involved with a jewelry business. You are excited about it because of the manner it was presented to you. Then your mind goes to work on you (fear) you begin to see yourself having to wear this jewelry as part of your advertising. You know the compliments you have received on how beautiful they wear on you especially how you accessorize with them so you are now getting used to this life style and feel you should keep most of what you should be selling...it is not free. So your mind is telling you at this point of how much money you are loosing while selling this jewelry. It tells you how much you have purchased for yourself and how much you have actually sold. Mind you, you have not yet started this business but it has been presented to you and you do love it because you love jewelry. Now having rehearsed allthe above scenario in your mind you have convinced yourself why you should not even try it much less do it. Then your mind reminds you of the last thing you sold (coffee) real gourmet coffee. You drank so much coffee with your family and ended up with even much more in your pantry. Most parties you got invited to, you would take coffee as your party gift. You made a little sale but somehow it did not go quite as you anticipated to your dismay. At some point your friends stopped inviting you to their parties so you would stop giving them your gift of gourmet coffee. It was disaster and you do not plan on trying it again. Wow! If I were your friend or you I am convinced already, I will certainly not try it. But think about the word TRY. How convincing is that word. TRY is a word we often use when we are not sure of something so we say I will TRY. But we do not feel strongly about it so we should really not bother at all till we are convinced it is something we want to do. It is much more affirmative when we say I will DO this or that. From the get go we are convinced it is something we like and are willing to put our all into it. There is no FEAR there. This is exactly how quickly we buy into lies as a result of the fears we harbor and I will go into it later on in this chapter to talk to you about the root cause of FEAR. As soon as you recognize it you will be delivered from it through a simple prayer. Let us look at Amy and Pam two good friends in their 5th grade both 11years old. It is the beginning of summer and their families were both planning summer vacation, but they will be driving to their location out of state to see wonderful sites and have a great family time and some adventure too. Both Amy and Pam decided they wanted to make some vacation money so they can spend it on shopping for their friends and themselves in buying souvenirs and some memorabilia they can show off for having had a great summer. They knew their pocke

Book Summary:

Looking Forward puts some new spins on the old saying, "the future lies ahead." Pietruska's book is a history of forecasting in the United States from the 1860s to the1920s that reveals how methods of forecasting and ideas about uncertainty changed as institutions and individuals reckoned with what novelist Edward Bellamy noted as the "specter of Uncertainty" in the late 19th century. In that context, prediction became a ubiquitous scientific, economic, and cultural practice, and forecasts, accurate or not, offered illusions of control over one's future in what William Dean Howells recognized as the "economic chance-world" emerging at this time. Pietruska examines controversies over the production, circulation, and contestation of crop estimates, weather forecasts, economic predictions, and the predictions of fortune-tellers in order to uncover the social lives of forecasts that Americans used to mitigate risk in daily life. The book's overarching argument revises historians' understanding of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a "search for order" by demonstrating that a search for predictability yielded just the opposite: acceptance of the economic and cultural uncertainties of modern life. The search for order and the forces of chance and contingency may seem at odds, but Pietruska reconciles the two frameworks by recasting the 1860s to the 1920s as a period in which government bureaucracies, information networks, and professional forecasters came to accommodate the very uncertainties they had originally sought to conquer. As a cultural history of scientific and popular forecasting from the Civil War to World War I, this book grapples directly with a profound issue: how do we produce knowledge about the future?

Book Summary:

This book is a collection of poems I have written throughout my life. I started writing when I was in high school. The early poems were for girls that I knew. No copies of these were kept. I started to retain copies in college. My poems moved from just words to life stories, personal thoughts and my God. I have shared some with a few friends, which for me is difficult, because I tend to keep most everyone at arms length. My journey has been filled with lifes up and downs and my poems reflect the joys and sorrows I experienced and some you may have experienced. Most important for me is that Jesus is my constant companion who rejoices with me in the good times and carries me through the hard times. Psalm 23: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. NIV He makes me to lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his names sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
