Book Summary:

Everything changes for Kate, Moya and Romy when they receive word that Maeve Dillon, their mother, is critically ill. It is time to return from Dublin, London and New York to Rossmore and the old stone house overlooking the Irish Sea where they grew up. But ancient jealousies surface as each sister confronts the past and the decisions they have made. For work-driven Kate it is time to take stock of her role as a high-flying ambitious lawyer and single parent; life is a battle between work and looking after Molly with little time for a proper relationship. Even Patrick, the man she once fell for, has ended up marrying her sister. Beautiful and intense Moya must take a hard look at her marriage to the charming but unfaithful Patrick and consider her own worth. For wild child Romy who has travelled the world and hasn't put a foot on Irish soil for years, it is time to finally stop running and find the courage to confront her family. A good and caring mother, Maeve Dillon has somehow over the years labelled each of her three daughters: Moya the beautiful, Kate the brains, and Romy, the bold and wild one. Now it is finally time for all three to break out of the box.

Book Summary:

Jess has been in love with her best friend, Kate, for seven years, but her feelings have never been returned. One night they sleep together, and Jess finds out how much it is possible to be hurt by someone close. Jess and Kate struggle to redefine their friendship. They spend a week at Jess's family holiday house in a small seaside town, Awatangi, intending to make the time to talk things through, but the conversations never happen. Kate makes vague promises, but begins to have second thoughts. Jess wants Kate, and nothing else, and is heartbroken that isn't enough.Jess decides – while everything is changing in her life – that she doesn't want to go on living in the city, that she wants to return to Awatangi. Part of her hopes some physical distance between them may help things with Kate, and part of her – frustrated and upset – simply wants to leave Kate behind. In Awatangi, Jess meets Keri, a local lawyer who has also recently returned home. Like Jess, Keri surfs, and like Jess, she seems to feel some attachment to her family roots in Awatangi. Jess is drawn to Keri, but forces herself not to let anything happen. Despite everything, Kate is still Jess's closest friend, and she has loved Kate all her life. She feels she has to give the situation with Kate as long as she can to work itself out. Awatangi is about coping with feelings for a close friend that are not returned, set in a small holiday township on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is an exploration of getting what you've always wanted and it not being enough, of being in love with one person and wanting another, and of finding out that life doesn't always turn out as expected.

The blossoming love between Siddique and Wasiela in the midst of an uprising against the cruel regime is set against the bleakness and the beauty of the peninsula - the myriad characters reacting with humour and courage to the turmoil surrounding them. Against the backdrop of the ever-present mountain and the persistent south-easter, the novel is a portrait of a cosmopolitan city isolated from the world, of a happy-go-lucky community caught up in the throes of a revolt against oppression, of an extended family responding to the new challenges facing them, of the slowly developing love between the two protagonists getting entangled in the maelstrom - with devastating consequences. contents: The Family Of Many Children In The Motherless Mother City Days And Nights Full Of Fire And Love Sadness In The House Of Love A Whirlwind Of Ashes [] SADNESS IN THE HOUSE OF LOVE 1. The Family Of Many Children In The Motherless Mother City "They chase shadows," Fahdila said with measured contempt. Only Siddique, dreaming of the treacherous Atlantic eyes of Wasiela - the fairest virgin of the Cape - heard her. He looked at Fahdila's alabaster features across the supper table ... and said nothing. Her voice reverberated in his skull, flying among the colourful discord of budgies flying around in the rarefied air of the lounge, hovering about in the excited atmosphere of cousins and aunts gathered for the evening. From then on boisterous laughter took over, a carnival of delights in the festive atmosphere: ...

Book Summary:

Montague (1867-1928) was an English journalist, known also as a novelist and writer of essays. He was born and brought up in London, the son of a Roman Catholic priest who had left his vocation to marry, and was educated at the City of London School and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1890 he joined the Manchester Guardian where he became a leader writer and critic. Opposed to the First World War prior to its commencement, he gave it his support once it had begun in the hope of a swift resolution. Aged 47 in 1914, well over the age for enlistment, he dyed his white hair black to fool the Army into accepting him. He began as a grenadier-sergeant, rising to lieutenant and then captain of intelligence in 1915. Later in the war he became an armed escort for VIPs visiting the battlefield, including H G Wells and Bernard Shaw. After the end of the war he wrote in a strong anti-war vein and Disenchantment (1922), a collection of newspaper articles about the war, was one of the first prose works to strongly criticise the way the war was fought, and is regarded by many as a pivotal text in the development of literature about the First World War.
