Book Summary:

This is the award-winning monograph of the Sunyer i Balaguer Prize 1999. The book presents recently discovered connections between Artin’s braid groups and left self-distributive systems, which are sets equipped with a binary operation satisfying the identity x(yz) = (xy)(xz). Although not a comprehensive course, the exposition is self-contained, and many basic results are established. In particular, the first chapters include a thorough algebraic study of Artin’s braid groups.

Book Summary:

This book is an introduction to the remarkable work of Vaughan Jones and Victor Vassiliev on knot and link invariants and its recent modifications and generalizations, including a mathematical treatment of Jones-Witten invariants. It emphasizes the geometric aspects of the theory and treats topics such as braids, homeomorphisms of surfaces, surgery of 3-manifolds (Kirby calculus), and branched coverings. This attractive geometric material, interesting in itself yet not previously gathered in book form, constitutes the basis of the last two chapters, where the Jones-Witten invariants are constructed via the rigorous skein algebra approach (mainly due to the Saint Petersburg school). Unlike several recent monographs, where all of these invariants are introduced by using the sophisticated abstract algebra of quantum groups and representation theory, the mathematical prerequisites are minimal in this book. Numerous figures and problems make it suitable as a course text and for self-study.

Book Summary:

Braids is a novel, somewhere between fictional romance, and a tale untold. A book dedicated to old-fashioned romance of yesteryears in todays day and age, was a challenge in itself. The completion of this book has been a journey; an endeavour to show how people can control their actions, even if the situation is beyond their reach. It is my hope that you, dear Reader, experience the book as you read it. As a fellow human who feels, thinks, believes, hopes. I believe everything begins and ends with the mind. Once it reaches the heart, it just stays. Hope Braids touches a chord with you too; for, to reach you, this is the only path I can pave. Enjoy what you hold. Enjoy what you have. Love, Yashodhara Singh.

Book Summary:

This book provides a comprehensive exposition of the theory of braids, beginning with the basic mathematical definitions and structures. Among the many topics explained in detail are: the braid group for various surfaces; the solution of the word problem for the braid group; braids in the context of knots and links (Alexander's theorem); Markov's theorem and its use in obtaining braid invariants; the connection between the Platonic solids (regular polyhedra) and braids; the use of braids in the solution of algebraic equations. Dirac's problem and special types of braids termed Mexican plaits are also discussed. Audience: Since the book relies on concepts and techniques from algebra and topology, the authors also provide a couple of appendices that cover the necessary material from these two branches of mathematics. Hence, the book is accessible not only to mathematicians but also to anybody who might have an interest in the theory of braids. In particular, as more and more applications of braid theory are found outside the realm of mathematics, this book is ideal for any physicist, chemist or biologist who would like to understand the mathematics of braids. With its use of numerous figures to explain clearly the mathematics, and exercises to solidify the understanding, this book may also be used as a textbook for a course on knots and braids, or as a supplementary textbook for a course on topology or algebra.

Book Summary:

The central theme of this study is Artin's braid group and the many ways that the notion of a braid has proved to be important in low-dimensional topology. In Chapter 1 the author is concerned with the concept of a braid as a group of motions of points in a manifold. She studies structural and algebraic properties of the braid groups of two manifolds, and derives systems of defining relations for the braid groups of the plane and sphere. In Chapter 2 she focuses on the connections between the classical braid group and the classical knot problem. After reviewing basic results she proceeds to an exploration of some possible implications of the Garside and Markov theorems. Chapter 3 offers discussion of matrix representations of the free group and of subgroups of the automorphism group of the free group. These ideas come to a focus in the difficult open question of whether Burau's matrix representation of the braid group is faithful. Chapter 4 is a broad view of recent results on the connections between braid groups and mapping class groups of surfaces. Chapter 5 contains a brief discussion of the theory of "plats." Research problems are included in an appendix.

Izzy wants to be like Grandpa Mike and make people happy, but the results of Izzy's generosity toward the Braids Girl are not what she expected. What does the Braids Girl really want? Young readers will cheer for Izzy when she at last realizes that the need for love and acceptance is what lies deep in the hearts of us all, no matter our age, race, gender, or social standing. This story of compassion and revelation lovingly demonstrates that despite outward appearance, little souls are much more alike than they are different—and everyone has something of value to give. Tim Ladwig's breathtaking artwork for children's picture books has earned him two finalist nominations for the Gold Medallion Award and a first-place tie for Publishers Weekly Religious Book of the Year, 1996.

And imagine if you walked away, with your kiss, like a curse: Sleeping no more, Eating no more, Drinking no more, Fishing for the sound of the kiss And once upon a poem, on a night of a full treason, I abandoned you. What would you do? Now that you are the (hostage) of a kiss! You ask me: Why do you write about love, are you amorous? Do you know that I kissed home secretly? Do you know that home is (hostage) to numerous kisses, And treason is not a habit of the yearning?"

Book Summary:

The Snake With Golden Braids seeks to understand how local inhabitants of the extraordinarily rugged Andean topography of Huanoquite, Peru came to understand their landscape and then build and maintain a system of irrigation ditches across it. The Huanoquiteno's original solution, a conceptually and architecturally complex irrigation system, was abandoned after the Spanish conquest of Peru, and replaced by a simpler, yet still complex, system, which is still in place today. Stephen G. Bunker combines a history of these systems with a rethinking of the local myths, legends, and environment to help make sense of the land and its uses. This book follows his intellectual and spiritual journey to learn not just about building and managing irrigation ditches, but about the very different ways of knowing the environment and the spirits of the earth that informed and empowered the original builders. Bunker's first-hand experience and research will prove an invaluable asset to sociologists, anthropologists, and environmentalists.

Book Summary:

The book consists of thirty-six poems. It talks about love in many different facets. It talks about love for God, nature, between men and women, people, love to improve life . . . and so forth. The book also tackles the problem of dictatorship, especially in the Middle East. It describes the oppression inflicted on the people and their sufferings. Some poems have a Sufi attribute. When they are directed toward a lover, one can feel and conclude that God is the one meant to be. Light pleasance can be felt when reading some poems, while other poems can be haunting and disturbing. It is poems like The Dead Sea and The Blob that crack us up laughing, and poems like Its Cleaning Time and Passion in the Cave that make us wonder why the tyrants do not learn a lesson from history and improve people's lives. Your Honor is a poem that uses symbolism to talk about the history of the Palestinian people who were farmers bombarded by Zionism. In general, the book talks about universal issues that touch all humans in general. It talks about the human weakness in adhering to God's commands, when adversity debilitates confidence and causes commotion in the heart and soul. But we do not despair, we pick up from where we were interrupted and we keep on walking the path we were meant to follow. This book combines the East and the West. It is written in English language, but the eastern mentality and way of thinking gave it a special aroma. It is not always that people see life from the same perspective, how about when it is written by a woman who is originally an Arab but absorbed and lived the western way and adopted it.
