Book Summary:

"AIDS has made a huge impact on our society medically, socially, politically, legally, and psychologically. Sarah Watstein encapsulates this interdisciplinary issue into approximately 4,000 terms and explains them objectively, clearly, and readably for high school students, adults, and medical professionals. The terms include related diseases such as Kaposi's Sarcoma, treatments such as interleukin, jargon-"no code"- and slang-"bareback sex." The appendixes list statistics, toll-free telephone numbers, Web sites, nonprofit and government organizations, clinical trials, databases, and payment assistance programs. Highly recommended for all libraries."--"Outstanding Reference Sources: the 1999 Selection of New Titles," American Libraries, May 1999. Comp. by the Reference Sources Committee, RUSA, ALA.

Book Summary:

The first supplement of the American National Biography, which was originally published in twenty-four volumes at the end of 1998, will put into print new articles added to the ANB'S online edition since June 2000. As part of what is now a standard reference work, with sales of more than 4,500 sets to the library market, the initial supplementary volume will be in strong demand from previous purchasers of the ANB. The majority of the 491 new articles concernfigures who have died since the end of 1995, the cutoff date for inclusion in the original print edition. The supplement will also fill in gaps in the original twenty-four volume edition with articles on people of note who died before 1996. Supplement 1 will be followed by future volumes coveringthree-to-five-year spans that will extend the ANB's coverage from the year 2000 onward.

Book Summary:

Review: "Over 10 years in the making, American National Biography is a fascinating study of the people who have shaped the United States. Why replace the Dictionary of American Biography instead of merely updating it through supplements? Because the editors include new scholarship and people who were missed in the original, especially women and ethnic minorities. Numbering 24 volumes and containing 17,500 entries, the work offers readable, informative, and critical biographies for each subject, the location of their papers (if they exist), and selective bibliographies. Excellent indexes--subject, contributor, place of birth, and occupation--enhance use. This is an outstanding set that will be heavily consulted for many years to come."--"Outstanding reference sources 2000", American Libraries, May 2000.
