Book Review & Summary:

Megan Rapinoe, Olympic gold medalist and two-time Women's World Cup champion, has become a galvanizing force for social change; here, she urges all of us to take up the mantle, with actions big and small, to continue the fight for justice and equality Raised in a conservative small town in Northern California, the youngest of six, Megan Rapinoe was four years old when she kicked her first soccer ball. Her parents encouraged her love for the game, but taught her that winning was much less important than how she lived her life. From childhood on, Rapinoe always did what she could to stand up for what was right—even if it meant going up against people who disagreed. In One Life, Rapinoe reflects on the choices she has made, her victories and her failures, and embarks on a thoughtful and candid discussion of her personal journey into social justice. After the 2011 World Cup, discouraged by how few athletes were willing to discuss their sexuality, Rapinoe decided to come out publicly as gay and use her platform to advocate for marriage equality. Recognizing the power she had to bring attention to critical issues, in 2016 she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with former NFL player Colin Kaepernick to protest racial injustice and police brutality—the first high-profile white athlete to do so. The backlash was immediate, but it couldn’t compare to the overwhelming support. Rapinoe became a force of change, both on and off the field. Using anecdotes from her own life and career as an Olympic gold medalist and two-time women’s World Cup champion, from suing the US Soccer Federation over gender discrimination to her widely publicized refusal to visit the White House, Rapinoe discusses the obligation we all have to speak up, and the impact each of us can have on our communities. Deeply personal and inspiring, One Life reveals that real, concrete change lies within all of us, and asks: If we all have the same resource—this one precious life, made up of the decisions we make every day—what are you going to do?

Book Summary:

Sitting in a meadow in the shade of a crabapple tree were two little sisters. They watched as ants traveled back and forth on an exact path with loads that appeared much too heavy for their tiny backs. Meeting other ants they would stop and engage in "ant talk" then march on to their intended destination. Observing nature, the sisters learned that all of life's creatures have little worlds of their own that somehow must be important to God. Otherwise, what was His creative purpose for their being? One Life is the story of an ordinary person who watched as life progressed from being relatively simple and somewhat understood to being one in which the infinite perplexities appeared beyond understanding-let alone solvable. It is about a teacher's life experiences as she observed that lurking beneath the surface were interferences that would make the teaching of children much more difficult than it ought to be. In its own subtle way One Life shows how biblical truth has been undermined one step at a time, slowly, very slowly, so that society in general is taken unaware. The real concern is that today it continues. Virginia Parks Jones was born May 23, 1922, to Hobart and Esther McBrayer Parks in the hills of Kentucky in a town called Corbin. She taught school for forty years at the elementary and junior high levels, having begun her career in the small coal-mining community of Mary Helen. She ended her career in Orange County, Florida. She and her husband, Harry, reside in Harlan, Kentucky perhaps proving that the hills of Kentucky have a way of calling you back home.

Book Summary:

What is the “Christian life” all about? Studying the Bible, attending church, cultivating a prayer life, witnessing to others—those are all good. But is that really what Jesus has in mind? The answer, says Scot McKnight in One.Life, lies in Jesus’ words, “Follow me.” What does it look like to follow Jesus, and how will doing so change the way we live our life—our love.life, our justice.life, our peace.life, our community.life, our sex.life—everything about our life. One.Life will open your eyes to the full, compelling immensity of what it means to be a Christian. “Jesus offers to us a kingdom dream that transforms us to the very core of our being,” says Scot McKnight. “His vision is so big we are called to give our entire life to it. His vision is so big it swallows up our dreams.” Discover exactly what Jesus meant when he announced the arrival of God’s kingdom. Equipping you with a new understanding of that kingdom’s radical nature, One.Life shares profound, challenging, and practical insights on how to demonstrate its reality in your life. In many ways, what The Cost of Discipleship by Bonhoeffer challenged Christians to do in earlier generations, One.Life will do for a new generation. One.Life will call you beyond the flatlands of religiosity toward a kingdom vision that will shape everything you do.

Book Summary:

When Kate Grenville’s mother died she left behind many fragments of memoir. These were the starting point for One Life, the story of a woman whose life spanned a century of tumult and change. In many ways Nance’s story echoes that of many mothers and grandmothers, for whom the spectacular shifts of the twentieth century offered a path to new freedoms and choices. In other ways Nance was exceptional. In an era when women were expected to have no ambitions beyond the domestic, she ran successful businesses as a registered pharmacist, laid the bricks for the family home, and discovered her husband’s secret life as a revolutionary. One Life is an act of great imaginative sympathy, a daughter’s intimate account of the patterns in her mother’s life. It is a deeply moving homage by one of Australia’s finest writers. Kate Grenville is one of Australia’s most celebrated writers. Her bestselling novel The Secret River received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. The Idea of Perfection won the Orange Prize. Grenville’s other novels include Sarah Thornhill, The Lieutenant, Lilian’s Story, Dark Places and Joan Makes History. Kate lives in Sydney and her most recent book is One Life: My Mother’s Story. ‘What a difficult thing it must have been to write, but what a treasure [Grenville] has given us...Evocative and fascinating, this brave and heartfelt tribute will appeal to anyone interested in their own family story, Australian history, or the lives of women.’ Books & Publishing ‘Losing your mother is a turning point in everyone’s life...Kate Grenville has translated that revelation into a totally mesmerising story which reads not like a memoir, but rather like a perfectly paced novel.’ Australian Women's Weekly ‘Real life painted with with an almost fictional verve, it’s an intensely engaging portrait of a world in flux.’ New Daily ‘The writing glides, egoless, through this one life that adapted to the massive changes of a century...I closed the book with regret, wanting more.’ Monthly ‘[A] social history written with the storytelling skill of a novelist.’ Australian ‘A gift to countless readers who will recognise their own experience, or their mother’s experience in these pages.’ Australian Book Review ‘With her customary elegance and warmth, Kate Grenville has lovingly documented her mother’s life, capturing the aura of the times. I thoroughly enjoyed her engrossing story.’ Chronicle ‘A tribute to a generation of tough Australian women whose stories have mostly been considered unworthy.’ North and South ‘The sharing of this story of resilience, persistence and a mother’s enduring love will resonate across generations.’ Good Reading ‘Not only one of the world’s greatest writers, but one of the world’s most intelligent writers, Kate Grenville does an astounding job in telling the story of her late mother in One Life.’ Booktopia, Books of the Year 2015 ‘One Life focuses on her mother’s specific history but in a way that resonates with us all...She makes one ordinary woman’s life seem remarkable and emblematic.’ Aviva Tuffield on ArtsHub

Book Summary:

The third reader of my long-gone school days said something like, Life is a river, from its small and unimportant beginning it flows steadily onward. It may hesitate, but never stop until early or late its end is reached. By anyones calculations, the river of my life has been a long and, on the whole, a very placid one. No treacherous rapids or impassable falls have ever disturbed its steady flow. I have filled many pages with recollections of what to some may seem a very humdrum and uneventful life. Arent most lives just that except to the individuals who have lived them? This self-appointed task has been a very pleasant one. I trust that someone sometime in the future will find pleasure and perhaps a bit of knowledge hidden in these pages. It is said that three score years and ten is ones allotment for life; beyond that, one lives on borrowed time. It has never been clear to me just where and from whom this time is borrowed. I must say, the last decade and a half that I have borrowed from somewhere have been most satisfactory. I most sincerely hope that my credit will hold good awhile longer

Book Summary:

ONLY ONE LIFE is the story of the life and ministry of Kenneth Steward. It reveals the adventures of a poor city-bred country boy who dreamed of one day growing up and traveling to see the world. That dream was fulfilled when he served with his wife as missionaries from the famine-plagued plains of Central India to the snow-capped Himalayas in the far north. Whether it was a hurricane in the Atlantic, a threatening mob in their village, or a horde of stinging bees in the jungles of Western India where they served in a small school for missionaries' children, God's hand of protection was on them. God eventually took them to British Columbia where they had a fruitful ministry with immigrants from India. Through nearly 60 years of ministry, the author and his wife came to experience God's provision in times of great need. Kenneth Steward was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota just before the Great Depression. He attended a Bible college in Southern Tennessee where he met his future wife, Wilma. Together they served as missionaries in the United States, India and Canada, as well as other places around the world. Though officially retiring at the end of 1990, they continued in active ministry until his wife sustained a stroke, as he was to begin a brief pastoral ministry on Prince Edward Island, Canada. The Stewards presently live in Southeastern Missouri at Missionary Acres, a retirement village operated by Baptist Mid-Missions.

For those interested in Zen and moving meditation, kyudo practitioners of all levels, as well as students of the Way of martial arts, this volume is an indispensable guidebook.
