Book Review & Summary:

"The Irishman is great art . . . but it is not, as we know, great history . . . Frank Sheeran . . . surely didn’t kill Hoffa . . . But who pulled the trigger? . . . For some of the real story, and for a great American tale in itself, you want to go to Jack Goldsmith’s book, In Hoffa’s Shadow.” ―Peggy Noonan, The Wall Street Journal "In Hoffa’s Shadow is compulsively readable, deeply affecting, and truly groundbreaking in its re-examination of the Hoffa case . . . a monumental achievement." ―James Rosen, The Wall Street Journal As a young man, Jack Goldsmith revered his stepfather, longtime Jimmy Hoffa associate Chuckie O’Brien. But as he grew older and pursued a career in law and government, he came to doubt and distance himself from the man long suspected by the FBI of perpetrating Hoffa’s disappearance on behalf of the mob. It was only years later, when Goldsmith was serving as assistant attorney general in the George W. Bush administration and questioning its misuse of surveillance and other powers, that he began to reconsider his stepfather, and to understand Hoffa’s true legacy. In Hoffa’s Shadow tells the moving story of how Goldsmith reunited with the stepfather he’d disowned and then set out to unravel one of the twentieth century’s most persistent mysteries and Chuckie’s role in it. Along the way, Goldsmith explores Hoffa’s rise and fall and why the golden age of blue-collar America came to an end, while also casting new light on the century-old surveillance state, the architects of Hoffa’s disappearance, and the heartrending complexities of love and loyalty.

Book Summary:

Aluk is a young Kurdish woman who gets adopted by a childless European academic couple, after a common climb to the summit of the biblical mountain Ararat. She follows her new parents to Crecheville, where she starts Law studies. She is intrigued by the idea that humans’ destiny is to permanently desire more: that is a blessing and curse at the same time. She starts her career joining the ICRC (Inter. Committee of the Red Cross), serving in Iraq, Eastern Sudan, and Jerusalem. Three years later Aluk metamorphoses into a Diplomat for her adoptive country working in Israel, Morocco, Nigeria, Russia, Caucasus, Iran, Uzbekistan/Tajikistan, a peace mission to Afghanistan introduces her to a cosmos following its own rules.Negotiating with the Taliban and their nemesis, Ahmad Shah Massoud, gives her a lasting lesson: “ if you can, trust in God, if not, trust nobody.” Her defence ministry calls her to help out in coordinating its intelligence services, but soon her ministry needs Aluk in Kenya, where she discovers a powerful motivator “greed without borders”. Aluk continues her career in Israel again and then as Ambassador to Sudan/Eritrea, Vietnam and Poland. Once in retirement Aluk tries to give something back to her Kurdish roots. She happens to know a key aid to Boris Johnson, Ambassador Tim Barrow, so she gets an appointment with the PM. She is not trying to get another (this time Kurd oriented) “Balfour declaration” from London: hence she is not aiming at a Kurdish State but more realistically for promis- ing cooperation domains within a Union of Levante. This Union could first, like it happened not so long ago in Europe, start with creating conditions, for the regional countries to cooperate with each other. Exploring political and cultural diversities in many of the worlds most challenged nations, she delivers services with respect and empathy for all humans and other beings giving us on her way a glance into chronic problems of most societies. Andrej Motyl, born 1956 in Western Carpathian Mountains in former Czechoslovakia. Due to the suppression of the Prague Spring August 1968 his family emigrates to Switzerland. After Law Studies in Zürich and language courses in Paris, he joins the International Committee of the Red Cross as a Delegate. 1989 he passes the Exams into the Swiss Diplomatic Service, in which he serves until 2018. He also wrote “Tierischer Ernst, eine Erzählung für Iraner, Libanesen,Tessiner und andere”. He paints intensively watercolours. Andrej lives with his wife Christine between Zug and Lugano in Switzerland. Their son Matteu is a Student of Economics in Warsaw.

Book Summary:

An alleged victim of the Son of Sam shares his search for the truth about who really tried to kill him in this true crime story. In 1976, a killer who called himself “The Son of Sam” shot and killed a half dozen people and wounded as many more in New York City. During his crime spree, the madman left bizarre letters mocking the police and promising more deaths. After months of terrorizing the city while garnering front-page headlines and international attention, a man named David Berkowitz was arrested. He confessed to the shootings, claiming to be obeying a demon that resided in a dog belonging to his neighbor “Sam.” Among the alleged victims was Carl Denaro. On the night he was shot, Denaro was hanging out with some friends at a bar when he met up with a woman named Rosemary Keenan. The couple left the bar and went to Keenan’s car for some privacy. However, a few minutes later, the windows of the car exploded as Denaro was shot in the head by an unseen assailant. Miraculously, Denaro survived the attack. When Berkowitz was arrested, he was charged with trying to kill Denaro. However, there was a twist. Although he confessed to the other shootings, after his conviction Berkowitz denied attacking Denaro. Now, after years of research, Denaro is convinced that Berkowitz was telling the truth, and that someone else tried to kill him . . . In “The Son of Sam” and Me, author Carl Denaro with co-author Brian Whitney (The “Supreme Gentleman” Killer) reveals his search for the truth and his shocking conclusion regarding the real shooter’s identity. Denaro also discusses his friendship and investigative partnership with Maury Terry, the author of The Ultimate Evil, which is considered the definitive case study on the theory that Berkowitz did not act alone. Includes never-revealed correspondence between Denaro and Berkowitz

Book Summary:

In Maximum Harm, veteran investigative journalist Michele R. McPhee unravels the complex story behind the public facts of the Boston Marathon bombing. She examines the bombers' roots in Dagestan and Chechnya, their struggle to assimilate in America, and their growing hatred of the United States - a deepening antagonism that would prompt federal prosecutors to dub Dzhokhar Tsarnaev "America's worst nightmare." The difficulties faced by the Tsarnaev family of Cambridge, Massachusetts, are part of the public record. Circumstances less widely known are the FBI's recruitment of the older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as a "mosque crawler" to inform on radical separatists here and in Chechnya; the tracking down and killing of radical Islamic separatists during the six months he spent in Russia - travel that raised eyebrows, since he was on several terrorist watchlists; the FBI's botched deals and broken promises with regard to his immigration; and the disenchantment, rage, and growing radicalization of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar, along with their mother, sisters, and Tamerlan's wife, Katherine. Maximum Harm is also a compelling examination of the Tsarnaev brothers' movements in the days leading up to the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013, the subsequent investigation, the Tsarnaevs' murder of MIT police officer Sean Collier, the high-speed chase and shootout that killed Tamerlan, and the manhunt in which the authorities finally captured Dzhokhar, hiding in a Watertown backyard. McPhee untangles the many threads of circumstance, coincidence, collusion, motive, and opportunity that resulted in the deadliest attack on the city of Boston to date.
